E3 2012: 5 Things We Loved

6 June 2012 10:58 AM, PDT

With day 2 of E3 out of the way, the big event is winding down and all of the big announcements and presentations are more or less behind us. And it was a pretty solid show, albeit one without any real surprises. With that in mind, let's look back at some of the better things to come out of this year's show (and later we'll talk about a few that were maybe not so great).

Like I said at the top, there were no huge surprises: Nintendo brought the Wii U and talked a lot about the Wii U, Microsoft kept pushing set top functionality for the 360 and gave you a peek at Halo 4, while Sony got new console bundles and gave us a visceral glimpse of The Last of Us gameplay. Still, digging through that, there was plenty to get excited for going into the back half of the year »

6 June 2012 8:51 AM, PDT

Bethesda Executive VP Todd Howard demoed the "Dawnguard" expansion at E3 and also provided a tentative release date for the 360-only Dlc: June 26th. No word on pricing, but the vampire-riffic expansion is in beta right now, and if you're interested, you can hit up the "Dawnguard" page to sign up and help Bethesda work out all of the bugs.

E3 2012: An Explorer In Trouble In These "Tomb Raider" Screens

5 June 2012 4:05 PM, PDT

Lara Croft versus the elements, some dudes in these new E3 images.

Bruised, battered, menaced, hungry, and alone, Lara Croft's upcoming adventure in the Tomb Raider reboot is a far cry from her PSOne and PC adventures from the way back. All you needed back then was a couple of guns, some sass, and maybe a few rampaging dinos to keep it interesting for players for the early 3D action-adventure game.

What a difference a decade a half makes, right? Crystal Dynamics has spent the last few years trying to figure out how to make the character more approachable to new audiences, and the idea they struck on was to lose the almost ridiculous self-assuredness and get the heroine back to her roots.

Now this could be an incredible opportunity to reinvent the character for a post-Uncharted gaming landscape and everything we've seen so far seems like an answer to »

E3 2012: This New "Sleeping Dogs" Trailer Is Nothing To Bark At

5 June 2012 3:30 PM, PDT

Plus, we've got new screenshots after the jump.

How many of you out there have seen director Johnny To's Election films? Just electric, tense stuff about the blood-soaked election of the new boss of a Hong Kong Triad with action zipping back and forth between the island and mainland China. You should totally check it out.

Oh, Sleeping Dogs? Yeah, United Front Games' open world action title looks and feels nothing like that, but I thought I could provide a public service for those of you out there uneducated about To's films. Sleeping Dogs is nothing to sneeze at, though, offering martial arts, shooting, and driving action on the crime-ridden streets of Hong Kong.

Sink your teeth into these E3 screens:

Sleeping Dogs is headed to the 360, PS3, and PC on August 14th.

E3 2012: New Screens From "Hitman: Absolution"

5 June 2012 3:00 PM, PDT

Glamour shots of the back of Agent 47's heads in these screens from E3.

After last week's frankly baffling sexy nun trailer, the marketing for Hitman: Absolution appears to be back to form, emphasizing the "hit" part of the title and not so much the "hit nuns" element.

The upcoming game's trailers and images up to this point have emphasized a heavier, more serious turn in the series as the bald assassin grapples with a hit gone bad and find himself targeted by his old bosses at the Ica.

Here's that gallery for your perusal:

Hitman: Absolution will be hitting the 360, PS3, and PC on November 20th.

E3 2012: See "Star Wars 1313" In Motion

5 June 2012 2:30 PM, PDT

Fresh air is overrated to bounty hunters, apparently as we get one cutscene and some gameplay in two videos.

The new Star Wars game from LucasArts is set a thousand levels beneath the surface of the planet Coruscant and promises to tell some of the hidden backstory of the ever more interconnected Star Wars universe. In the game, you play as a bounty hunter digging through the criminal underbelly of the planet in order to unravel a conspiracy.

Here's a second video for your pleasure featuring the new, unnamed (anti?)hero in action:

E3 2012: "The Elder Scrolls Online" Shows Some Character(s) In A New Teaser

5 June 2012 1:45 PM, PDT

A hint at character classes mark this new teaser for Bethesda's upcoming Mmo set in the Elder Scrolls universe.

While it would have been nice to get a look at some of the gameplay from The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda's at least given us a hint of the direction they're headed with what's supposed to be a more stylized take on the world for the Mmo, likely because the high level detail inherent in the single-player counterparts might be kind of hard time maintain for a massive online world.

No word about a release date or any new announcements about Teso, but hopefully we'll start getting more details soon about precisely some of the races, classes, and combat of the upcoming game.

E3 2012: U Know Wii Should Play "Pikmin 3"

5 June 2012 1:00 PM, PDT

At some point, U will forgive Mii for that title.

This morning, Nintendo revealed Pikmin 3 for the Wii U. Among the features in the sequel are a new Rock Pikmin that can be used to smash hard objects in the environment, as well as a Challenge Mode to test your fruit-picking skills.

The Wii U twist is that you can tilt the Wii GamePad to aim your Pikmin at targets while also using the second screen to follow the game's action. You can also replay the action from a level once you've completed it, using the GamePad to fast-forward and rewind your progress in the level. Plus, it's a much prettier game than it's previous-generation counterparts.

Pikmin 3 is due this holiday season.

E3 2012: "Devil May Cry" Gets a New Trailer and Screens

5 June 2012 12:20 PM, PDT

Dante cares not for nightclubs in this new trailer for the Devil May Cry reboot.

The new trailer shows off young Dante's new enemies, The Order as well as some of the hallucinogenic action that will be peppered throughout the action game next year. if you'll recall, our just-starting-out hero has been institutionalized as is wanted by clandestine, demonic forces in the reboot of Capcom's action series.

Stylish action: confirmed.

You can check out some new screens below.

Devil May Cry will be available on January 15, 2013 for the PS3 and 360, and sometime later that year for the PC.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto Join "Star Trek" Game Voice Cast

5 June 2012 11:51 AM, PDT

Pretty much the whole cast from the 2009 film reboot to voice their characters in the upcoming game from Digital Extremes and Namco Bandai.

Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, and Karl Urban, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin are making their way to the small screen in Star Trek, reprising their roles from the film in the third-person shooter from The Darkness II developer Digital Extremes.

With the sequel on the way, Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have collaborated with God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk to craft a story that presumably takes place between the two films. In the game, players can take on the role of either Kirk or Spock, each featuring their own combat skills in this over-the-shoulder shooter.

The game's enemies will be the lizard-like Gorn from the classic series' episode "The Arena." They're apparently bent on the whole galaxy domination thing and Kirk and Spock »

E3 2012: Nintendo's Presentation - It's all About the Games

5 June 2012 10:38 AM, PDT

More than any other presentation, Nintendo's was super-focused on new titles for both its new platform the Wii U and the 3Ds.

The conference kicked off with Shigeru Miyamoto explaining some of the vision behind the Wii U controller, with the focus on a dedicated personal screen for each players. The big idea is using the second screen for innovative game functionality, Miyamoto saying that you wouldn't have to wait to turn on your controller to weigh yourself in Wii Fit

Another example: the upcoming Pikmin 3, which is making its debut here. Again, you'll control 100 Pikmin with enhanced animations and graphics, along with a new black Pikin type made of rock. These can be aimed using the Wii Motion Plus technology to break hard objects in the world. The basic controls will use the Nunchuck and the Wii Controller Plus. E3 2012: "Arkham City" on the Way to the Wii U

5 June 2012 10:00 AM, PDT

WB is bringing the Caped Crusader to Nintendo's new console along with touch and tilt controls.

The full title is Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition and it'll come with all the second screen bells and whistles you'd expect from the Wii U's GamePad. The touchscreen will allow you to manage Batman's inventory, detonate bombs, and guide the remote-controlled Batarang. The game will also include a Wii U exclusive version of both Batman and Catwoman.

No word on whether it will include all of the costume Dlc, challenge rooms, and Harley Quinn's Revenge expansion, but it would be weird if Nintendo didn't include these. No word on a release date, either, but we'll be on the lookout for more info.

E3 2012: Day One Wrap Up

5 June 2012 9:27 AM, PDT

Some thoughts, questions, and concerns as EA, Ms, Sony, and Ubi wrap up their first day presentations.

Stop trying to get me to look at two screens

Microsoft's SmartGlass program seems like a direct threat to the Wii U's controller-with-a-screen, but neither is something I especially want when it comes to games. I like the stop and start media functionality they've promised (it's similar to when you use Netflix and resume a movie on another device and I'm down with that), but the invitation to constantly look down at my phone or tablet while I'm playing a game on my TV isn't all that interesting to me.

It's all about splitting the viewer's attention, which, from a philosophical I-like-people-to-pay-attention-to-movies-and-games standpoint feels heretical to me.

The EA/Ufc thing

Thq: ouch. The loss of the Ufc brand has to be a huge blow to the publisher, and while this probably happened months ago, »

E3 2012: Sony's Conference Brings Ubisoft Exclusives, Latest From Quantic Dream

4 June 2012 7:37 PM, PDT

It took Sony all of no seconds to start off with dubstep. Let's do this.

The presentation opened with Sony President Jack Tretton heralding his company's creative as the greatest in the industry, in a show all about bringing gaming to wherever you are. With that said, Quantic Dream's David Cage cam up to talk interactive storytelling, emotion, and his company's new project, Beyond. The Heavy Rain studio's next game deals with the very idea of life after death, featuring protagonist Jod Holmes over a 15 years as she deals with things beyond the world of the living. Ellen Page will be the actress portraying Jodi.

Cage presented footage from early in the game which he said was running in real time. An obviously traumatized Jodi sat in a police station as an officer attempted to find out what happened to her and why she was unwilling or unable to talk. »

E3 2012: Ubisoft Shows off "Splinter Cell: Blacklist," "Far Cry 3" and More

4 June 2012 4:58 PM, PDT

Ubisoft gets you hyped for the next year of gaming with killer tigers, naked girls, dancing girls, assassins, and government killers (who are also assassins).

The presentation kicked off with, what else, dancing girls. A six minute megamix of dance tracks—and Will Smith's "Wild, Wild West"—opened the show as part of the Just Dance 4 reveal. It was... something.

Moving on, we saw some gameplay footage from Far Cry 3. Featuring what I'm sure Ubisoft will tell us was some tasteful nudity, it features the game's hero, Jason, attempting to free a Polynesian island from pirates. In the demo, Jason stalks through the dense foliage of the jungle to stealth kill the nasty pirates and free the enslaved and abused locals. The bulk of the action was balanced between jungle locales and a shantytown as the pirate leader, Fas, taunts you over the Pa system. Also, beware of the »

Big Huge Games Is Gone, Long Live Epic Baltimore

4 June 2012 3:40 PM, PDT

Our week-long gaming love-in got off to an early start over the weekend as Epic announced that they would be working with former employees at the defunct Big Huge Games to build a studio up in Baltimore. Epic, which is down in North Carolina, was in the process of discussing some of the ways that they could expand their staff to work on upcoming projects and with the dissolution of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games, the Gears of War folks saw an opportunity to get an influx of talent while doing some good for the displaced employees.

Mike Capps, President of Epic described the new undertaking as an "impossible studio" and there are still a lot of logistics to getting things up and running, but along with Zynga, Zenmiax, and other studios on the East Coast, it's great to see a lot of the folks without jobs finding a new »

E3 2012: Electronic Arts' 2012 Preview Higlights "Warfighter," "Dead Space" Sequel

4 June 2012 2:13 PM, PDT

Dead Space 3 gets bro-op, Ufc comes to EA, and Criterion is back with Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Isaac Clarke returns in Dead Space 3 from Visceral Studios. This time he's back and as verbose as he was in Dead Space 2. Visceral demoed the game onstage and touted the sequel's drop-in, drop-out co-op as Clarke and new character Sgt. John Carver face the necromorph threat again. The new entry promises more lanky, grotesque masses of body horror to bedevil our heroes, along with derelict facilities. There's more of a run-n-gun cover-based shooter feel to this one with gun-toting human combatants coming at Clarke and Carver hard. Honestly, I'm bummed that Visceral seems to be moving the series away (either incrementally or altogether) from the slow-paced survival horror of the first entry.

E3 2012: TwitchTV Gets Their First In-Game Integration With "The Showdown Effect"

4 June 2012 1:20 PM, PDT

TwitchTV will open up in-game streaming with the press of a button for the first time in the Paradox Interactive title.

The Showdown Effect is a multiplayer shooter in the style of 80's and 90's action movies and when it's released in the first quarter of next year, you can stream the action directly through TwitchTV. For the in-gaming streaming service/eSports hub, this means making it easier for gamers to share their time online with a title without any additional software or workarounds. For developer Paradox Effect, it's all about being able to expose players to their game with a button press.

This is pretty much in line with the aspirations that TwitchTV CEO Emmett Shear laid out when we spoke earlier this year. Going forward, the big "get" will have to be a Aaa, mass-market title that's willing to embrace TwitchTV as a streaming option.

In addition to their big announcement, »
