'Defense Grid: the Awakening' is the First Freebie for Xbox Live Gold Subscribers

by Joseph Leray

The inaugural game in Microsoft's "Games on Gold" program -- which rewards Gold subscribers with free Xbox 360 games twice a month for the rest of the year -- is Hidden Path Entertainment's "Defense Grid: the Awakening," a sci-fi tower defense joint from 2010. That's fine and all, but most of us were under the impression that either "Halo 3" or "Assassin's Creed 2" were on the way.

Microsoft announced the program during their press conference at E3 and hasn't shared much since. Here's how Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Yusuf Medhi introduced Games on Gold: "And to kick off that program, I'd like to share with you just two of the titles we're going to offer over the next few months: 'Assassin's Creed 2' and 'Halo 3.'"

As Xbox 360 spokesman Major Nelson pointed out on Twitter, Microsoft never actually said that 'Assassin's Creed 2' and 'Halo 3' were going to »

'Doodle Jump For Kinect' Review - High Jump Hijinks

For a game to make the jump from a portable device to home console there are many, many platforms to land on along the way. While porting over a game might be easy, retaining the essence of what makes it good is usually the hardest hurdle to clear. The latest game to try to make the massive leap from smartphones (Android, iOS, BlackBerry, etc) to a whole new world of consoles is the wildly successful "Doodle Jump." With fifteen million downloads across all of its previous platforms, it clearly has the high profile visibility that it needs to succeed in a new realm of competition, but can the simple and addictive gameplay of the original help it find success on the Xbox 360... as a Kinect game?

"Doodle Jump for Kinect" retains the same core gameplay that its small screen counterparts had, while adding in full-body motion controls to simulate the movements of the Doodler. »

Old School, Flight School: 'Strike Vector' Is Your Shiny New Dogfighting Mech Game

by Joseph Leray

I was pretty enamored with "Evr," the Oculus Rift space-dogfighting game by Ccp, when I played it earlier this year. The decline of the flight sim genre has been well-documented, and it's not often enough that people get to suit up, strap in, and blow each other up into teensy-tiny smithereens.

Alas, there's no release date in sight for the Oculus Rift. What's a boy to do? Enter "Strike Vector."

The skinny: "Strike Vector" is a multiplayer arena combat game made in ten months by the four people at the appropriately-named Team Strike using Unreal Engine 3.

In a word, the game looks good, its floating oil rigs and slumtowns dense and detailed. There's some sort of dystopian backstory about mercenary fighter pilots working for mega-corporations, but the important thing is being able to swoop in and out of post-industrial nooks and crannies in search of people to explode. »

'Rogue Legacy' Review (PC) -- Avenging Your Father, Again and Again and Again...

[Source]

Take equal parts "Castlevania," "Ghost 'n' Goblins," and "The Binding of Isaac," mix in some basic middle school biology and you'll get "Rogue Legacy." Developer Cellar Door Games -- the creators of "Villainous" and "Don't Shit Your Pants" -- hone their development skills on a game much larger in scope. Described as a rogue-lite, "Rogue Legacy" serves up a standard platformer/RPG with a fun twist -- your sons and daughters take up the mantle of hero after you die.

The story is your standard RPG fare. Basically, you're out to avenge the death of your king who was betrayed by his finest knight. It's pretty bare bones but enough is there to keep pushing you forward. You'll also find journals written from the betrayer's view as his mind begins to deteriorate from having been locked away in this magical fortress for some time. Eventually, there is a big reveal »

Handful of New 'Killer is Dead' Trailers Introduce Bosses and (Kinda Sexist) Mondo Girls

by Joseph Leray

The last time I checked on "Killer is Dead," Grasshopper Manufacture's imminent future-noir curio, director Goichi Suda was ruminating on his appreciation of television and how it's influenced the structure and marketing of his game. Since then, though, publisher Xseed has released three new trailers that have somehow slipped between my cybernetic hyper-fingers.

"Killer is Dead" has garnered a fair amount of buzz on the strength of its visual style, Suda 51's institutional flair, and the fact that protagonist Mondo Zappa has a robot arm and gets to go to the Moon. The third trailer introduces some things I'm -- pardon the pun -- less jazzed about. Namely, the game's Mondo Girls, a group of women included in the game as an homage to 007's traditional Bond Girls.

Real talk: Bond's vaguely non-consensual sexual encounter with Sévérine (I had to look her name up) -- »

'Project X Zone' Review - Let Our Powers Combine

Most gamers in the West have likely never heard of 2005's "Namco X Capcom," a tactical RPG developed by Monolith Soft for the PlayStation 2 that was only released in Japan. That game brought together characters from various Capcom and Namco games, ranging from "Ghosts N Goblins" to "Tekken," to combat the forces of evil. The game was never localized, and seemingly faded into obscurity as a quirky one-off that U.S. gamers would never get to experience. Fortunately for curious fans, the follow-up to "Namco X Capcom," "Project X Zone," has made its way to the States, complete with an expanded roster of publishers contributing characters.

"Project X Zone" blends the vast and varied worlds of a host of classic game franchises in a truly unique way: by culling characters for some of Namco Bandai, Capcom, Sega's biggest franchises, "X Zone" creates an experience that can't be rivaled, on any system. »
