Light, Escapist Shows Rise to the Head of the Freshman Class of 2009-10

30 April 2010 1:30 PM, PDT

When the going gets tough, the tough veg out in front of the tube.

Variety's picks for the top new series of the 2009-10 season suggest that, in these tough times, viewers' favorite new shows were generally the light, escapist, family-friendly ones. Most were comedies (including 'Community,' 'Glee,' and 'Modern Family'), but even the dramas were low-key affairs ('Parenthood,' the strangely reassuring 'Good Wife,' the fantasy 'Vampire Diaries').

Of the four new dramas on the list, only one was a crime procedural ('NCIS: Los Angeles'). Even the one reality show on the list was one that didn't involve competition and elimination ('Undercover Boss').

How Much Longer Can ABC Keep 'Desperate Housewives' Cast From Bolting?

29 April 2010 12:00 PM, PDT

With the sixth season of 'Desperate Housewives' winding down, how much longer can the series stay on the air? Depends on the players and how long ABC can get them to stick around.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the network would like another two seasons. Creator Marc Cherry has spoken of a nine-season run. But the core cast - Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, and Eva Longoria Parker - are contracted for only one more season, and so far, says Deadline, there's been little negotiation between the network and the stars about an eighth season.

Thomas Haden Church, Claire Forlani Exit 'Episodes'

29 April 2010 10:20 AM, PDT

Citing a scheduling conflict with an indie film he's working on, Oscar-nominated actor Thomas Haden Church has bowed out of Showtime's upcoming original series 'Episodes,' the Hollywood Reporter is reporting.

Also making an exit: Claire Forlani ('Meet Joe Black'), though no word yet on the reason behind her exit. In the meantime, Forlani has been unceremoniously replaced by British actress Tasmin Greig.

Currently in pre-production in London with a start date set for mid-May, 'Episodes' stars Matt LeBlanc as, surprise, Matt LeBlanc. The single-camera show from 'Friends' creator David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik has the erstwhile 'Joey' parodying himself as he vies to be cast in a U.S. version of a hit U.K. sitcom.

Other potential contenders for the job: 'The Marriage Ref' producer and panelist Jerry Seinfeld, and '30 Rock'/'The Office'/'Date Night' stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell. 'Parks and Recreation' star and 'SNL' vet Amy Poehler was also reportedly a contender, but she is scheduled to give birth to her second child days before the telecast.

From 'The Untouchables' to 'Goodfellas' to 'The Sopranos,' film and television have turned bad guys into big money and big ratings.
