Victoria Fringe Festival '12: Finding the "Wind in the Pines:" A Japanese Noh Play

2 September 2012 12:31 PM, PDT

Director: Kazuhiro Tamaru. Cast: Joyce Ishii, Misaki Hotaka, Ayumi Hamada. Not all ghost stories have to be scary. Some tales can elicit their chills through melancholy and the Japanese Noh play “Wind in the Pines” is heavy with it. With this version produced by Sokai Salon for the Victoria Fringe Festival, the style can make for a powerful show. However, the added need to read subtitles (displayed on a back screen) really requires audiences to process more. Some of those introductions could have been put on the playbill rather than being offered on stage. And while the translation is beautiful and poetic, to watch the performance and read at the same time really requires a quick mind to interpret it all. While the inclusion of Asian style theatre is a welcome addition to the Fringe scene, the question of whether or not more will be featured will be up in the air. »

Matthew Gunnoe’s The Pit Nears Completion and Preview Clip ("Meet the Family")

1 September 2012 4:00 AM, PDT

Grueling weather conditions and being able to set your watch by the rain has not stopped Matthew Gunnoe’s The Pit from finishing. He answers fans of his works concern of when this movie will be released by replying that it will be ready for SyFy by Halloween and plans for video release forthcoming. The first clip has been released, and the final product should be interesting to watch in more ways than one. Gunnoe responded to questions about production by exclaiming, "The Pit has been an extraordinary pain in the ass! Mainly because of the delays in production due to adverse weather (rain and unbearably hot!). Everyone should check out the director’s commentary on the video release about all of this; I promise it won’t be boring.” The DVD release will most likely differ from the broadcast version. The plan is to have that available by December. »

Victoria Fringe Festival '12: Visit the "Temple of Khaos:" A Satire on Civilization

31 August 2012 10:00 AM, PDT

Just what kind of sacrifice is needed when going to see "Temple of Khaos: A Mythic Comedy?" Perhaps a feather is required to tickle the funny bone. Or better yet, a bell, book, and candle is required to cast a spell upon the audience. One theme this Fringe play explores is in its look at how progressive civilizations are paradoxically doomed. Fortunately, all that is needed to understand this product is spending time to understand the underlying message this satire makes. At the Victoria Fringe Festival, this show tells the tale of a Traveller (Daniel Nimmo) leaving one world and crash landing upon another. Supposedly, he’s from this planet’s future, but more story cues are needed to tell audiences if this assumption is such the case. The Traveller has landed on a planet Gaia, and the creatures he finds crowns him ruler. As a result, he has to »

Victoria Fringe Festival '12: "Dirk Darrow:" NcSSi Gets Serious ... or Not

31 August 2012 4:00 AM, PDT

The 26th Annual Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival is alive with comedy, drama, horror and noir for even the fans of the supernatural to enjoy. Two years ago, this reviewer took notice when "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" was recreated for live theatre, and once the Fringe is in your blood, there is no turning back. This year, "Dirk Darrow: NcSSi (Not completely Serious Supernatural investigator)" will tell theatre enthusiasts why. When audiences recognize that the performer is in the moment, that defines a show. Tim Motley is Dirk Darrow. To see him as the befuddled investigator trying to solve a mysterious death is part of the spectacle. He entertains a crowd with his one-liners, gags and puns. His Sam Spade-like performance is part of this show’s highlight. The character of Dirk Darrow might even make Sergeant Joe Friday from Dragnet's smirk. But when his routine is based more »

Enjoying the Chaos of "Falling Skies": A Television Review ("A More Perfect Union")

30 August 2012 6:56 AM, PDT

Director: Greg Beeman. Writers: Robert Rodat, Remi Aubuchon, Bradley Thompson, and David Weddle. Executive Producer: Steven Spielberg. Cast: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Colin Cunningham, and Sarah Carter. The finale for Seas. 3 of "Falling Skies" literally ended with a bang. The battle between the 2nd Mass and the alien overlords seems to be shifting in favour of humanity. Meanwhile, a couple of subplots were developed with Anne forcibly admitting her pregnancy. Overall, this final episode seemed to incorporate a lot of story ideas and plot elements, which is different from the previous two episodes: "Death March" and "The Price of Greatness." Only the final scene, meant as a cliffhanger ending, seemed to falter. In case you missed it, the 2nd Mass is a militia unit fighting off an alien invasion. They are now on the eastcoast in Charleston, South Carolina. Tom Mason (Noah Wyle »

Pickman’s Muse is Not Greek: A Movie Review

30 August 2012 4:00 AM, PDT

Director: Robert Cappelletto. Writers: Robert Cappelletto and H.P. Lovecraft. Cast: Barret Walz, Maurice McNicholas, Tom Lodewyck, Joyce Porter, and Mike Dobray. Fans of H.P. Lovecraft may be thrilled to find two tales rolled into one in Pickman’s Muse. Readers will find the character from “Pickman’s Model” tossed into the horrors found in “Haunter in the Dark.” In this movie, he is named Robert Pickman (Barret Walz) than Richard. The protagonist is a painter who loses his inspiration and desire to create. But one morning, the skies are alive with a beckoning golden vista with the tower of a dilapidated church speaking to him. Cinematographer Robert Cappelletto does an amazing job in making camera magic. He is like Picasso when considering how careful the hues and saturations work in the lighting of the cityscape and interior sets. To capture a golden sunrise really requires knowing how the video camera works. »

28 August 2012 6:43 PM, PDT

Indie filmmaker Matthew Gunnoe has two new projects in the works, Creeper and Contempt. The former will be marketed and the latter slated for the web. While one-word movie titles make for an easy attention-grabber, to generate interest hinges on catching audiences with a cool poster design. With these two new projects, some movie enthusiasts may well wonder how the ideas came to be? “Creeper came about when I was trying to think of a project that had never been done before,” answered Gunnoe. “Unbelievably, no one has done a film about the dangers of social sites, at least not in any of my research.” The film focuses on three spoiled girlfriends that are fed up with being harassed by perverts on social networking websites and they decide to go on the offensive. This director reveals a few telling plot details: “After many attempts at finding someone to victimize at random, »
