Fast and Furious 6 Review: Fastest and Furyist?

23 May 2013 1:39 AM, PDT

Fast & Furious movies make no effort to hide what they are and certainly don't pretend to be something they're not. Brain checking at the door is a requirement which the franchise's millions of fans have proven time and time again is more than welcome to accommodate. Delivery of the expected "goods" is as predictable as rain being wet to the touch.

The successful formula Fast & Furious movies start with are scenes featuring shiny, colorful cars revving souped-up, after-market engines, shiny chrome - well, everything, Nos Nitrous canisters, and tires that will never, ever, ever go flat.

To further embellish the rides, add scantily clad women dancing to DJ-spun house music, usually in well-lit, well-attended public places, with zero-to-no interference from the authorities.

Now mix in a crime caper of some kind. Hollywood itself actually has a mathematical formula for this that says that if you have more than three leads above the title, »

Man of Steel Trailer Sends Zod in Search of Superman

23 May 2013 12:57 AM, PDT

Man of Steel is only a few weeks away from returning Superman to the big screen, and in 3D for the first time no less. Warner Bros. has distributed numerous trailers and TV spots dating back to last year, but none are as impacting as presumably the final trailer released this week.

In the new trailer that is timed to debut theatrically with The Hangover Part III this weekend, Superman's (Henry Cavill) enemy General Zod (Michael Shannon) comes to planet earth looking for the former resident of Krypton. He announces himself to the world in every conceivable language, a scene that depicts mankind's first contact with extraterrestrial life. Not counting Clark Kent, that is.

At this point in the film it is presumed that the world has not been introduced in Superman. Or if they have, they don't yet know that he hails from another planet. The arrival of aliens »

Watch NBA Playoffs 2013 Game 1 Free Live Online Stream: Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat

22 May 2013 8:46 PM, PDT

The third seed Indiana Pacers come into tonight's opening game of their 2013 NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals with the top seed Miami Heat feeling as if they can pull off the major upset and advance to the final round. Thus far they have played like champions through the first two rounds, but find themselves staring at an opponent with far more playoff experience, much like the Grizzlies have in their Conference Finals series with the Spurs.

The Pacers lost to the Heat in the second round of last year's NBA Playoffs so they're no stranger to Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. They are relative newcomers to the Conference Finals, though, as this group has never advanced this far. The Pacers haven't been true contenders since the Reggie Miller days so it's been a long time coming.

Heading into tonight's first game with the Heat, Pacers forward David West »

Iron Man 3 Blu-ray Release Date Earlier Than Expected

22 May 2013 1:17 PM, PDT

Judging by the steady solid Blu-ray pre-orders for Marvel's Iron Man 3 starring Robert Downey Jr. at Amazon.com, it will be one of the hottest home video releases a little later this year. We initially thought later would mean September, but new information suggests Tony Stark and pals will swoop into homes a little earlier.

According to a report at MTV's Screen Crush, the finalized Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release date for Iron Man 3 is August 27, 2013. They site their own sources for the information which helps solidify its believability. MTV isn't about to make up information like that and print it.

Screen Crush doesn't have any additional information about the release other than reconfirming that the extra Chinese footage will appear re-edited into a short film.

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 were distributed on Blu-ray and DVD via Paramount Home Entertainment and both arrived in late September. »

Watch NBA Playoffs 2013 Game 2 Free Online Live Stream: Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs

21 May 2013 9:30 PM, PDT

Non one expected the Memphis Grizzlies to crumble against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of their 2013 NBA Playoffs Western Conference Finals match. The Spurs jumped out early and never looked back, cruising to a relatively easy 105-83 win against a team that had quickly become the favorite to advance to the Finals.

Much of the Grizzlies blame is being directed by forward Zach Randolph and the pitiful offensive and defense effort he put up. The All-Star, who typically is one of the scoring catalysts for the team, could only notch two points against an extremely stingy Spurs defense. At no point in the game did Randolph look comfortable. Nothing he was doing away from the ball seemed to get him clear looks at the basket.

No doubt the Grizzlies will be fired up and ready to make up for their lackluster showing in Game 1. They've played their worst game »

Watch NBA Draft Lottery 2013 Online Live Stream

21 May 2013 8:52 PM, PDT

Before tonight's NBA Playoff on Espn, all the NBA teams will finally learn what positions they will be picking at during next month's 2013 NBA Draft.

The Orlando Magic currently own the best odds of winning the top spot in the draft with odds 25 percent odds. The Charlotte "soon to be Hornets again" Bobcats have the next highest percentage at 19.9 percent. Coming in third odds-wise are the Cleveland Cavaliers at 15.6 percent.

Rounding out the top five in terms of odds are the Phoenix Suns at 11.9 percent, relative newcomers to the lottery, and the New Orleans Pelicans at 8.8 percent.

As a refresher since the NBA Draft can be a little tricky to understand, only the top three selections are determined by the lottery system. The remaining 11 picks in the first round comprising the overall "lottery" are determined by record and, where there were tie-breakers, whoever won the tie-breaker that was determined earlier today. »

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Wii U Launches and Gets New Trailer

21 May 2013 11:41 AM, PDT

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have released a new Wii U port of last year's summer hit game Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and sent along a launch trailer to back the game's arrival.

The core gameplay of Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is unchanged between last year's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions and the new Wii U version. However, the Wii U hardware allows for some welcome new features that will only enhance gameplay.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is most engaging as a cooperative game and the Wii U GamePad allows one player to see the whole screen up on the TV while the other sees the whole screen on the GamePad. This eliminates a loss of real estate that split-screen on the current version forces.

Additionally, a single player can opt to play on the main screen or remotely on the GamePad. However, when the main »

CBS Yanks Comedy Mike and Molly Season Finale Following Devastating Tornado

21 May 2013 12:04 AM, PDT

CBS has opted to pre-empt the Mike and Molly season finale episode titled 'Windy City' following a devastating tornado that touched down just south of Oklahoma City earlier today.

The episode centered around the title characters, Mike and Molly, holed up in Chicago as a tornado approached. No tornado damage was to appear in the episode, but the network rightfully felt the plot hit a little too close to home considering today's tragic events.

Pre-empting the Mike and Molly season finale is a re-run of an earlier episode. The season finale is expected to air at an as-of-yet determined later date.

Here is the official statement as issued by CBS earlier today:

"Due to the tragic events this afternoon in Oklahoma, we are pre-empting tonight's season finale of Mike & Molly, which has a related storyline. A repeat broadcast of Mike & Molly will run in the time period. The »

Resident Evil Revelations Review: Two Analog Sticks Greater Than One

20 May 2013 10:27 PM, PDT

In February of 2012, I played and reviewed Resident Evil: Revelations for Nintendo 3Ds. At the time, I called it a "return to form" and "revelation." The year 2012 also saw the releases of a co-op shooter set in the Resident Evil universe with Resident Evil: Operations Raccoon City, high definition re-releases of two older Wii games for the PS3's PlayStation Network in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, and a full-on numbered entry in the long running series with Resident Evil 6. Who would have known that after all of that - including the highly anticipated Resident Evil 6 - Resident Evil: Revelations would stand as the best Resident Evil game of 2012.

Now, a year later, Capcom has wisely decided to take this wonderful game and port it to the PS3, the Xbox 360, the Wii U, and the PC.

Jennifer Lawrence Feeling Blue on Set of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past

20 May 2013 9:44 PM, PDT

X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer's latest behind-the-scenes tweet catches Jennifer Lawrence in the act of getting her make-up touched up. For most actors that wouldn't be a huge deal. It is when you're playing a naked blue mutant with yellow eyes and fiery red hair.

A stone-faced and nearly naked Jennifer Lawrence stares in the camera for Singer's inside look at the making of his latest film. She's got all of Mystique's unique body patterns already applied, the yellow contacts in place, and the hair as slicked back as ever.

In Singer's Tweet he calls Mystique "vengeful," offering a little glimpse into what the shape-shifter might be up to in the film. At the end of X-Men: First Class, Mystique chose a side and that choice led her under the wing of Magneto (Michael Fassbender). She figures to have a bigger agenda for this next outing. »

20 May 2013 9:00 PM, PDT

The time will be coming for the Rebellion to assemble and fight back against the Empire on the small screen.

Disney and Lucasfilm have revealed the next animated Star Wars series will be titled Star Wars Rebels. As the name implies, it will be set between the events of Revenge of the Sith that saw the Empire and Darth Vader come to be, and A New Hope in which Luke Skywalker began his heroic journey from farm boy to savior of the Galaxy. Sony Offers Teaser Glimpse of Playstation 4 Console

20 May 2013 1:16 PM, PDT

The cat and mouse game between Sony and Microsoft got good this morning when Sony offered a teaser glimpse of their new upcoming Playstation 4 console.

The PS4 tease comes via a video that starts with a blurry look at the entire console, then quickly cuts between close-ups of such things as the play button and vents. Really the only thing the video tells us is that the console will be black (at minimum) and it's got a really cool stylized "4" on it.

Microsoft's big next Xbox reveal is set for tomorrow and it is widely expected that they will show their new console during the one-hour presentation that will be live streamed. Sony's big Playstation 4 console reveal during their E3 media briefing on June 10 at 6pm Pst.

Star Trek Into Darkness $84 Million Box Office Debut Misses Estimates

20 May 2013 1:21 AM, PDT

Paramount Pictures' highly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness arrived at the North American box office this past weekend with Captain James Kirk and crew beaming up a solid but unexceptional $84 million during the3 film's four days of release. The arrival of J.J. Abrams' latest Trek adventure pushed previous two-time champ Iron Man 3 and Warner's The Great Gatsby down a notch on the list, yet each continued to rake in the big bucks.

Star Trek Into Darkness was projected to have a bigger opening, especially with the inclusion of IMAX and 3D screens. I've published a more in-depth analysis of Trek's debut here. Additionally, the Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD versions of Star Trek Into Darkness are already available for pre-order.

The return of Kirk and Spock did knock Iron Man 3 down but far from out. Marvel's first Cinematic Phase 2 flick zipped by the $300 million (domestic) and »

Game of Thrones Episode 28 'Second Sons' Preview and Online Live Stream

19 May 2013 9:17 PM, PDT

Daenerys Targaryen has played Season 3 of HBO's Game of Thrones to perfection thus far. She amassed an army and freed slaves in one swift stroke, and her march toward King's Landing seems to be going without a hitch. Her arrogance and successful flashes of power won't yield desired results forever, and the first roadblock in her mission may have already arrived.

In tonight's episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys will meet the Titan's Bastard, also known as Mero. He should have a rocky relationship with Dany from the start and prove that freeing the slaves of Yunkai will not be an easy task for the Khaleesi.

The synopsis for tonight's episode also tells us that Tyrion and Sansa will spend their first night together, and that a wedding will take place in King's Landing. Sansa and Tyrion together should be good for a barrel full of laughs. The wedding referenced »

Why Paramount's Star Trek Into Darkness Stalled in Box Office Bow

19 May 2013 6:01 PM, PDT

With the exception of 1989's Star Trek V and 2002's Nemesis, the Star Trek film franchise has been consistently reliable at the box office to the tune of approximately $80 million gross for each entry. Of the twelve movies made thus far, only three managed to break the fan barrier to reach out to mainstream audiences: 1986's The Voyage Home, 1996's First Contact and 2009's reboot Star Trek. Given the massive $257 million the last film brought in - a series high - it was easy to see why Paramount Pictures may have thought that Star Trek had risen from the franchise dead and hit the mainstream.

So why didn't Star Trek Into Darkness have a bigger opening than the last film? Sure, $84 million at 3,868 locations (a percentage of which are 3D and IMAX equipped) is nothing to sneeze at. Most movies would kill for an opening - or total run - reaching those heights. »
