‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary Special Watched by 10.2 Million Brits

BBC One’s “Doctor Who” 50th Anniversary special was the second-most watched program in the U.K. on Saturday night. According to the BBC, the 75-minute episode, “Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor,” was watched by an average 10.2 million people. It came in second only to “Strictly Come Dancing,” ITV’s version of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” which attracted an average 10.6 million viewers. Sarah Palin Accepts Martin Bashir Apology But Stands by Slavery Comments

Sarah Palin on Sunday accepted MSNBC host Martin Bashir’s apology for some nasty remarks he made about her last week after she compared the national debt to slavery, but she didn’t back down. “The definition of slavery is to be beholden to a master, and we will be beholden when that note is due,” the former governor of Alaska and Republican vice-presidential candidate said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” Bashir, in response to Palin’s initial comments, called her a “world class idiot.” He described a punishment that forced a slave to put “sh-t in his mouth” and said Palin. »

‘Gravity’ Breaks Imax Record on Way to $35M Debut in China

The 3D space epic “Gravity” has posted the biggest Imax opening ever in China on its way to a sensational $35.5 million first weekend in the People’s Republic, Warner Bros. reported Sunday. “Gravity brought in $7.4 million from 123 Imax screens – it was in 5,854 theaters total– or one-fifth of its grosses there. The previous best Imax total was the $6.3 million posted by “Iron Man 3″ in May. China now ranks as the third largest market for “Gravity,” behind the U.S. ($245 million) and France ($42.8 million). Mick Jagger About to Become Great-Grandfather

Time really does seem to be on the side of Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones’ lead singer and frontman is set to become a great-grandfather early next year. His daughter Jade said that her 21-year-old daughter, Assisi, expects to give birth in several months, according to The Sunday Times of Lonoon. She said she didn’t expect Jagger to slow down now that he’s set to become a great-grandfather, and that the 70-year-old Jagger wasn’t unsettled by the news. “He said, ‘Well done’ when my daughter told him,” she said. ‘Philomena’ Connects With ‘Best Exotic Marigold’ Crowd in Strong Specialty Box Office Opening

The Weinstein Company opened “Philomena,” the Stephen Frears-directed drama starring Judi Dench, in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles this weekend and it took in $133,716 for a strong $33,429 per-location average. Dench plays Philomena Lee, an Irish woman who searches for her son that she was forced to give up for adoption as a teenager. The film is based on BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith’s “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee.” British comedian Steve Coogan co-stars in the film, which he co-wrote with Jeff Pope, as a journalist who helps Lee search for her child. ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Blazes to $307M Globally but Can’t Match ‘Iron Man 3′ at U.S. Box Office

DGA Board Approves New Contract With Producers That Offers Wage Increases

The DGA National Board has voted unanimously to approve and recommend for ratification a new three-year collective bargaining agreement, DGA president Paris Barclay announced Saturday. “A deal like this doesn’t happen by wishful thinking. Willie Nelson Postpones Tour Dates After Band Members Injured in Bus Accident

A tour bus carrying Willie Nelson’s band, but not the singer himself, was involved in a serious accident early Saturday morning. Nelson’s website said the bus crashed along I-30 around 3:30 a.m. when it hit a bridge pillar due to icy conditions about 80 miles east of Dallas. Rick Santorum, Susan Boyle Faith-Based Film ‘Christmas Candle’ Blown Out In Theaters

Rick Santorum and Susan Boyle’s holiday movie “The Christmas Candle” opened in theaters on Friday but with a “Hunger Games” sequel dominating the box office, the faith-based film failed to catch fire with audiences, or critics for that matter. Santorum, former Republican presidential nominee, is the CEO of EchoLight Studios, which distributed “Christmas Candle.” The story is set in 1890 in an English village where a candle grants one wish every 25 years at Christmas time.
