Talkback: Are you going to watch the world end?
13 November 2009 6:43 AM, PST
Headed out to see 2012 this weekend? I'm curious to know what you think of gay-director Roland Emmerich's latest movie, about the Mayan "predicted" end-of-the-world. MTV has a rather lackluster review of the film, as does Syfy. As these are both companies that produce bad reality television, they might be just familiar enough with crap to warrant considering their thoughts.
Still, I'm expecting 2012 to be big, dumb fun. What say you? What are your thoughts about the film? »
Previews: Don't get locked up with this Prisoner?
13 November 2009 6:35 AM, PST
The Prisoner is one of my favorite shows. Balls out insanity, the original 1960s Sf/spy/allegory series blew my 14-year old mind away the first time I saw it. (It came on right after PBS repeats of Doctor Who. It was hours of strange-accented greatness.)
Earlier this year, AMC set out to remake this classic series, setting up Jim Caviezel as the hero of the story (Number Six) and Ian McKellan as the ongoing antagonist / villain / mysterious force (Number Two.) On paper, that's an awesome match-up, if for no other reason than Sir Ian alone. Given the themes of autonomy, surveillance and security -- cornerstones of the original series and issues of deep concern to us in our terrorist touched world -- the new take on The Prisoner should have a deep, rich metaphorical vein to mine. Plus, this time out, the story has a bunch of gay themes. »
News: Would you like ice with your Moon?
13 November 2009 5:54 AM, PST
Nasa is announcing that their recent bombing of the Moon was a success: there's ice just below the surface. The Lcross spacecraft, which launched the original explosive, then analyzed the plume of debris sent up with an infrared spectrometer, detected the absorption of water. It did so on multiple occasions, pretty much acing the discovery.
What does this mean? To establish colonies and permanent refueling centers on the Moon requires a steady supply of water. If it's not there, you have to bring it with you, making the cost and weight requirements of space travel all the higher.
With quantities of water now present -- we still don't know how much, but scientists are estimating it's a lot -- that changes part of the equation and gets us that much closer to establishing a lunar base with a corresponding nuclear waste disposal system that can go critical in the year »
Views: The Twilight Terror -- Can you feel it?
12 November 2009 5:43 AM, PST
Oh, here we go.
With a scant 8 days until The Twilight Saga: New Moon illuminates our screens, what was, already, a slow-burn of images, marketing and shameless pandering now ramps to nuclear fusion fullness.
Consider the Volvo car ad (a truely Wtf moment the first time I caught it); the Twilight lunch box (sorry, "vintage carrying case"); an Edward shower curtain; the Official Condom (gives "bloody prick" a new twist, no?) and the (unofficial) Twilight dildo.
It sparkles.
Merits of the movie aside -- given how poorly written the first one was, this one can only go up in writing quality -- the one great thing about the media blitz are all of those new Taylor Lautner magazine covers.
Sometimes, media madness has its benefits. »
Talkback: Great Hera! They are Remaking Fright Night!
11 November 2009 2:52 PM, PST
Fright Night is getting a make-over.
"Mad Men" writer-producer Marti Noxon has been hired to pen DreamWorks Studios' revamp of the 1985 horror comedy "Fright Night." Before her work on AMC's "Mad Men," Noxon was a writer-producer on the bloodsucker series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," so fangs and stakes are in her blood.
Producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig set up the "Fright" project in May. DreamWorks executive Mark Sourian is overseeing for the studio.
Really? Why? Fright Night is a classic and should remain untouched.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Breaking: Dollhouse is Canceled!
11 November 2009 2:05 PM, PST
I'm sad right now... Dollhouse is canceled.
The network has canceled Joss Whedon's cult fave, which in May beat the odds with a second-season pickup despite low ratings.
The sci-fi series, which is filming episode 11, is expected to finish its 13-episode order.
After some dismal performance this fall, despite the ratings bumps "Dollhouse" got from DVR viewing, Fox benched the show for the November sweep after four episodes.
It is not clear if Fox will air the remaining episodes starting Dec. 4 as planned.
Someone, please pick this show up!

Review: Ponyo Aka The Cutest Movie Ever
11 November 2009 2:33 AM, PST
Okay, as the official anime nerd of DoorQ.com, it is my duty to bring to you the glory and wonders of Japanese animation. I've kinda been slacking on my blog posts for the past few months because of the new job and doing things even a censor bar couldn't protect you against with my boyfriend =)
No more, though! Back to my anime-gushing ways! I just spent a nice chunk of my raise (Can you believe it? People actually reward you for hard work and a good job) on some fabulous anime box sets spanning several different genres! This is gonna be Tight, Dawg!!!
*Ahem* Moving along... A few months ago, a bunch of friends of mine went with me to see Hayao Miyazaki's newest creation, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, as interpreted by Disney at a midnight showing on the big screen! The story of the »
Music: When You Get 1000 Hugs from 10,000 Lightning Bugs....
10 November 2009 12:48 PM, PST
I don't know if it's the 80s synth-pop stylings, the trippy, dreamy lyrics or the room full of awesomely geeky toys, but Fireflies, by Owl City, is my current music obsession.
I've bought it on iTunes, tricked it out as a ring-tone, and read whatever I could about the "group" -- in reality, it's just young hipster Adam Young -- all to satiate my desire for "more."
Memes are wacky.
Check out Fireflies, currently the top song in the USA, in the embed below.
Source: YouTube - Fireflies Owl City *Official Music Video* with Lyrics Update: A friend sent me a link to this kid's take on a music video for the song. Young gay boys in love are so cute. And I thought I was doing well to make a mix tape for my boyfriend when I was 19.

News: Trek Creator becomes part of TV Hall of Greats
10 November 2009 12:32 PM, PST
TrekMovie.com notes that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is being inducted into the TV Hall of Fame. Sponsored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Hall of Fame honors those who have "....challenged and shaped popular culture, changed television for the better and entertained us royally by doing so," they said in a press release.
In regards to Roddenberry,
The legacy of two-time Primetime Emmy Award-nominee Gene Roddenberry continues to flourish as the “Star Trek” franchise he created has reached 10 theatrical movies, seven television series and numerous merchandising and ancillary businesses–all of which maintain the late producer’s vision of the future. Often affectionately referred to as the “Great Bird of the Galaxy,” Roddenberry led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high adventure fiction. It wasn’t until 1966, when Roddenberry created and produced the original “Star Trek,” that he found his voice in Hollywood. »
Music: A little Star Wars Rap to take you home...
10 November 2009 12:19 PM, PST
The guys behind Star Wars Gangsta Rap and Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Special Edition are back once again. This time they've cut loose with some crazy mad dubs called Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Chronicles.
I have no idea what any of this means. I just post what I'm told to.

Real Science: Where I talk about a couple of Pricks
10 November 2009 12:05 PM, PST
So I'm not usually one of the "real sciencey" types 'round these parts. I leave it to the uber-doorQs like The Dqm, Carlos and Phantom Planet to post all that brainy stuff. They like to expand their brain cells. I like to drown, cure, stoke or otherwise explode mine.
Be that as it may, I found both of these stories of interest. Probably because they involve pricks. Okay, definitely because they involve pricks. I love talking about pricks.
Story One involves the creation of artificial penis tissue. Scientists have been able to artificially grow the fun cells that create our wacky wongs -- at least in rabbits. They've grown rabbit willy tissue, implanted that tissue in artificial "scaffolds" so those cells will form the proper cockular shape, then implant that scaffold into those unfortunate rabbits who've damaged their wee-wittle-wees, and, voila, a new functional penis results.
Seriously. These cloned cocks »

Preview: Demoicsex... The Movie?
9 November 2009 12:55 PM, PST
So late last Saturday night, I got bored and went to browse the 4chan boards to troll and see what was going on in one of my favorite scum-of-the-internets communities (I know, this already sounds pretty darn scary, doesn't it?). The /b/ board was a little too chaotic for my tastes that night, so I decided to sneak in to the /y/ board and browse all the gay pr0nz to see if there was anything particularly interesting that Anon was posting.
Found a fun thread with Metal Gear yaoi comics and some naughty fan art, an okay thread with some fan translated bara (Too much pixelation for my taste =P) and finally a winner with some interesting content: a thread where Anon was posting scans and fan art from the Demonicsex comic series.
Now, this definitely isn't a comic you'd find on the shelves of your favorite comic book store. »
Previews: For your next RPG purchase....
9 November 2009 8:51 AM, PST
So now that Dragon Age: Origins is burning up my XBox, my thoughts turn to the next glorious RPG video game to occupy the fleeting moments of free time I have.
Killing demons, dragons, trolls and various darkspawn are all quite fun and interesting -- it's truly a wonderful thing to separate a demon from its head in a shower of CGI blood -- but the imagination is only best satiated when death, doom and destruction are rendered against evil aliens, soulless automatons and impertinent humans.
Which means, of course, that only Mass Effect 2 will do. BioWare has released some new gameplay vids from the upcoming RPG/shooter, featuring the improved gameplay from that of the first game, but still depicting the "thematic" discussion system that really does make you feel like you are living inside a movie.
ME2 drops on January 26th. Me. Wanty. Now!
