During a press conference for "Pacific Rim," Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull spoke about the upcoming "World of Warcraft" movie, which is based on the popular video game franchise and is set to be directed by Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon). He said: "A lot of times what has happened in the past is, studios have said, 'How many people play that game? Okay, then that means they'll probably all go out and buy tickets [to see the film].' That is an incredibly poor way to make a movie. We don't know how to make a movie out of 'Warcraft,' the video game. It's the incredible story, the war, and these races, and everything these guys at Blizzard have come up with. They have 100 books, and just this incredibly rich world that they've created. We've taken our time [developing this property], because we absolutely don't want to screw it up. And I think we're »

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder recently said that Batman from "The Dark Knight" trilogy is not the same Batman who's part of the "Justice League" and "Man of Steel" universe. In other words, the plan is to replace Christian Bale as Batman. To get a confirmation of this, Entertainment Weekly reached out the Bale, who said: "We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That's enough. Let's not get greedy. I have no information [about 'Justice League']. I've literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a 'Justice League' movie, that's it. It's a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with." Discuss: Why Do Big-Budget Action Films Bomb in Theaters?

Brad Pitt's $200 million "World War Z" zombie film was all set to be a huge flop in theaters, until positive reviews started appearing online at the last second. Now it looks like the movie has a small chance of becoming profitable, barely. At the same time, Will Smith's $130 million "After Earth" sci-fi film and Channing Tatum's $150 million "White House Down" action movie surprisingly bombed in theaters. And Guillermo Del Toro's $220 million "Pacific Rim" and Johnny Depp's $250 million "The Lone Ranger" are on track to flop as well. So one must wonder, with why do films with top movie stars, based on popular properties, with huge budgets and talented directors keep flopping? Steven Spielberg and George Lucas recently predicted that studios would focus more on big-budget films for theatrical release, while dumping smaller budget movies straight to DVD, VOD or TV. But that doesn't seem to be the case, »

Johnny Depp Isn't Signed for The Lone Ranger Sequel, But Wants to Return

30 June 2013 6:45 PM, PDT

White House Down is a Box Office Flop, The Heat is a Surprise Hit

30 June 2013 6:45 PM, PDT

"White House Down," the $150 million action film, which is directed by Roland Emmerich (2012, Independence Day) and starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, has officially bombed in theaters. It needed to open to about $50 million domestically, but ended up with $25.7 million, which was only good enough for fourth place at the box office. The opening numbers is one of the worst for an Emmerich film. In 2004, his "The Day After Tomorrow" debuted to $68.7 million, while "Independence Day" opened to $50.2 million in 1996. "White House Down," which has a 48% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, will desperately depend on foreign box office to make any money. The similar themed "Olympus Has Fallen," starring Gerard Butler, opened three months earlier to $30 million. And it cost only $70 million to make, eventually grossing more than double its budget. The other wide release of the weekend was "The Heat" comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which landed in second place. »
