Brad Pitt's $200 million "World War Z" zombie film was all set to be a huge flop in theaters, until positive reviews started appearing online at the last second. Now it looks like the movie has a small chance of becoming profitable, barely. At the same time, Will Smith's $130 million "After Earth" sci-fi film and Channing Tatum's $150 million "White House Down" action movie surprisingly bombed in theaters. And Guillermo Del Toro's $220 million "Pacific Rim" and Johnny Depp's $250 million "The Lone Ranger" are on track to flop as well. So one must wonder, with why do films with top movie stars, based on popular properties, with huge budgets and talented directors keep flopping? Steven Spielberg and George Lucas recently predicted that studios would focus more on big-budget films for theatrical release, while dumping smaller budget movies straight to DVD, VOD or TV. But that doesn't seem to be the case, »

Ron Perlman Says Legendary Pictures Wants to Make Hellboy 3
22 hours ago
Even though Ron Perlman and director Guillermo Del Toro have been talking about completing the "Hellboy" trilogy, both recognized that Universal Pictures will likely never proceed with a third installment. But now that Legendary Pictures (Pacific Rim) has separated from Warner Bros and is looking for a new studio to partner with, the company has apparently expressed interest with Perlman and Del Toro for "Hellboy 3." According to Perlman, he recently spoke to Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull, who said that he "would love to see 'Hellboy 3.'" Obviously that's not a confirmation that a third installment will happen, but Legendary is known for taking risks and would likely be interested in maintaining a relationship with Del Toro. Johnny Depp Isn't Signed for The Lone Ranger Sequel, But Wants to Return
22 hours ago
Disney has been desperate to create a new franchise for itself, which is why it dumped $250 million into "The Lone Ranger," which re-teamed Johnny Depp with his "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gove Verbinski. When E! Online caught up with the stars of the movie, Depp, Armie Hammer and Ruth Wilson, the website was curious whether anyone signed a contract to return for future installments. Hammer said he's signed on for several more films. "I'm signed for three," added Wilson. Depp, however, refused to sign a multi-picture deal. "I think it was a one-shot deal," he revealed. "[But] if they started talking sequel on this I'd be ready to go in a second." Depp knows he has the power to avoid signing a multi-picture agreement in order to negotiate himself a huge pay raise for the sequel. Unfortunately, it's starting to look like we may never get a sequel, since "The Lone Ranger »
White House Down is a Box Office Flop, The Heat is a Surprise Hit
22 hours ago
"White House Down," the $150 million action film, which is directed by Roland Emmerich (2012, Independence Day) and starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, has officially bombed in theaters. It needed to open to about $50 million domestically, but ended up with $25.7 million, which was only good enough for fourth place at the box office. The opening numbers is one of the worst for an Emmerich film. In 2004, his "The Day After Tomorrow" debuted to $68.7 million, while "Independence Day" opened to $50.2 million in 1996. "White House Down," which has a 48% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, will desperately depend on foreign box office to make any money. The similar themed "Olympus Has Fallen," starring Gerard Butler, opened three months earlier to $30 million. And it cost only $70 million to make, eventually grossing more than double its budget. The other wide release of the weekend was "The Heat" comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which landed in second place. »
