Who's Directing the "MacGyver" Movie?

12 November 2012 3:30 PM, PST

Back in 2009, we've been trumpeting the big-screen version of "MacGyver." Well, it took 3 years, but the project is finally getting off the ground. We hope.

According to THR, New Line is in talks with James Wan to direct the film version based on the 1980s TV series starring Richard Dean Anderson as a resourceful detective who could assemble anything out of everyday objects to save his booty.

Wan, is of course, the creator of "Saw" and was behind 2010's "Insidious." The "MacGyver" script is written by Jason Richman ("Bangkok Dangerous") and the revisions were made by Brian and Mark Gunn.

And "MacGyver" fans, don't worry, the film will not be turned into a slasher flick. There's a strong indication that the movie version will not be a comedy either, but instead, a nail-biting thriller that puts the Angus MacGyver character front and center. »

Previous weekend's box-office champ, "Wreck-It Ralph" fell to No. 2 with a still-respectable and still-huge $33 million. So far, the Walt Disney Pictures flick has amassed a total of $93.7 million.
