On YouTube, ‘Pokemon Go’ Had Twice As Big A Launch As Any Other 2016 Game

22 July 2016 12:31 PM, PDT

Twitch is not the only online video platform benefiting from the runaway popularity of Pokemon Go. In a blog post, YouTube has shared some stats about the trendy augmented reality game. The video site noted, among other facts, that Pokemon Go received twice as much watch time in the period after its launch than the next-most watched 2016 release, Blizzard’s Overwatch.

YouTube did not specify the exact time period it defines as “the launch of Pokemon Go,” nor did it reveal an exact watchtime figure for the mobile game. Based on what we know about Overwatch, which has 775,000 subscribers and more than 85 million views on its official YouTube channel alone, Pokemon Go is quite the phenomenon; some videos related to it have rolled up tens of millions of views on their own.

YouTube did share some more concrete Pokemon Go information related to Google search data. The most exciting development »

Verizon Reportedly Close To $5 Billion Purchase Of Yahoo

22 July 2016 11:14 AM, PDT

The long saga of Yahoo’s sale may soon come to a close. According to multiple reports, Verizon is close to acquiring the digital media company for $5 billion.

While neither Verizon nor Yahoo have yet offered comments, the deal could become final over the next couple of days, according to a source who spoke with the Wall Street Journal. If the $5 billion figure is accurate, it would top the $3 billion price tag Verizon reportedly put forth back in June. By acquiring Yahoo, Verizon would beat out several other suitors, including At&T.

While Yahoo’s prestige has faded in recent years, it would still serve as a significant addition to Verizon’s burgeoning roster of digital media properties. The telecommunications company also owns AOL, which it purchased in May 2015 for $4.4 billion.

21 July 2016 3:41 PM, PDT

YouTube is reportedly hiring an executive who has a significant political pedigree. Oona King, a member of Britain’s House of Lords, has announced her decision to take a leave of absence from her position in order to become the global director of diversity at YouTube.

While YouTube has not yet confirmed the hire of King, the politician discussed her career move during an event at the House of Commons. She called YouTube “the future of broadcasting” and said her new position is “an amazing opportunity to go where the most exciting ideas are coming from.”

King is no small-time politician. The daughter of an African-American father and a Jewish mother, she became just the second black woman to join Parliament when she was elected in 1997. She has since served in several positions as a member of the left-leaning Labour party.

YouTube Millionaires: For Baracksdubs, The President’s Voice “Is Forever Embedded With Mine”

21 July 2016 12:32 PM, PDT

Each election cycle brings with its a new host of online video stars who use the heightened political climate to support their videos. 2004, for example, had JibJab. 2008 had the Obama Girl. In the 2012 election cycle, few creators soared quite as high as Fadi Saleh. Saleh is the man behind Baracksdubs, which syncs up words from President Obama's speeches to match popular songs. This format has proven quite popular and has inspired many imitators -- including the folks at NBC. As Saleh gears up for another set of election year dubs, we talked to him about his recent achievement of one million YouTube subscribers:

Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Fadi Saleh: It’s surreal. It’s been surreal since day one. When I started Baracksdubs in 2012, I didn’t imagine that the channel would grow to where it is today. »

Insights: What’s Next For TV News After Roger Ailes, Cord-Cutting, And Live Streaming?

21 July 2016 7:32 AM, PDT

The most powerful man in TV news is in trouble, and may soon lose his job. Meanwhile, network coverage of the political conventions has been carved down to an hour a night, a symptom of much diminished ambitions and indifferent ratings. Jon Stewart’s heirs couldn’t pull an Emmy nomination in a category that Comedy Central dominated for a decade. And of course viewership everywhere in TV news is settling downward, quickly.

Yes, it’s a complicated time to be in the business of TV news (or, as Stewart called his show, "fake news"). Perhaps the more interesting question as these sources of news all fade into history alongside Edgar R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite is what happens next? In what feels like an inflection point in the history of the business, who will be the faces of news in the future, if any?

Increasingly, if you’re looking »

Cenk Uygur Is Latest Creator To Defend YouTube Against Music Industry Executives

20 July 2016 3:35 PM, PDT

YouTube has picked up a new ally in its battle against the music industry. Cenk Uygur, the co-founder and co-host of progressive news and commentary channel The Young Turks, criticized several of the arguments recording industry big shots have wielded in their fight against YouTube.

In a 10-minute video, Uygur primarily focuses on the arguments presented by music manager Irving Azoff in a May 2016 open letter. In his letter, Azoff attacked YouTube’s Content ID system, which he called “meaningless,” and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s “safe harbor” provision, which he said gives YouTube an “unfair advantage.” Several top music acts, such as Taylor Swift and U2, co-signed Azoff’s comments.

For Uygur, those arguments don’t hold up. He notes that sites like YouTube "can't police the entire Internet” makes a comparison to Twitter, which would never survive if it were to be held responsible for the comments on its platform. »

Study: Viewers Feel Streaming Series Are Of Higher Quality Than Those On Cable And Broadcast

20 July 2016 10:33 AM, PDT

New York-based research firm Miner & Co. Studio has sought to study consumer attitudes around the term ‘Peak TV’ -- a concept coined by FX Network president and general manager John Landgraf to describe a saturation of popular and critically-acclaimed series, as well as a proliferation of distribution outlets. “There is simply too much television,” Landgraf notably said last August.

But Miner’s latest study, dubbed 'The Summer of Peak TV', found that consumers feel this summer represents a climactic moment in original programming -- and there are no signs that this sentiment is waning anytime soon. 73% of respondents stated that there is more quality original content being released today than ever before, 77% said that there was no such thing as “too much” good TV, and 78% said that having a litany of options “doesn’t stress them out.” (Miner conducted the survey earlier this month among 801 TV viewers aged 18 to 59).

With a fictitious award ceremony serving as its backdrop, Internet Famous parodies several common online video archetypes, ranging from the fame-hungry vlogger to the self-proclaimed auteur filmmaker to the viral video one-hit wonder. The film was directed by TotallySketch’s Michael Gallagher and executive produced by Gallagher and Steve Greene. There’s Now An Online Application Process For Anyone To Request Twitter Verification

20 July 2016 7:32 AM, PDT

Twitter is changing the process by which it verifies accounts -- or assigns a blue badge next to users’ names to signify that the user is authentic and of public interest. Rather than determining verification from within the organization, Twitter is now opening up an online application process so that anybody can request to have their accounts verified.

"We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification," said Twitter's VP of user services, Tina Bhatnagar, in a statement. "We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience."
