Kickstarter Provides ‘The Steps’ for More than Funding

28 April 2012 11:06 AM, PDT

Independent online video enthusiasts may recall the early 2010 original noir mystery web series based out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Steps told the story of Charlie Madison, “a lowlife private investigator from Los Angeles who’s forced to live under an assumed identity in middle America to escape his criminal past.” And The Steps was able to tell that story (as well as promote it by way of billboards on Chattanooga buses) because its writer/director Dylan Kussman received a financial grant from Create Here, “a local program to build Chattanooga’s cultural economy through arts, economic and cultural development initiatives.” For the second season of The Steps, Kussman and his production shop Giantleap Industries wanted to take Madison’s story back to the town where Madison came from, and give the character a 24-hour action-packed window in which the former Hollywood Pi attempts to find evidence that would clear his name and instead finds trouble. »

Jack White Live in ‘Unstaged’ Streaming Concert by Gary Oldman

27 April 2012 5:04 PM, PDT

Jack White released his first solo album (dubbed Blunderbuss) on Tuesday, April 24. On Friday, April 29, he’ll play his first concert since releasing his first solo album. That concert will be directed by Academy and Emmy Award-nominated actor and filmmaker Gary Oldman (who knows his way around a rock star and a music video). That concert will also be the first installment in the third season of Unstaged, the only live streaming, online original, music video series brought you by American Express, Vevo, and YouTube. The kickoff show of the solo tour of the former White Stripe is scheduled to start at 9Pm Et / 6Pm Pt, but if you can’t make it out to New York City’s Webster Hall or didn’t swing a ticket (because you left home without it?), Vevo and YouTube will be streaming all the Oldman-orchestrated action online. Massages, Manicures, Moms at Deca Digital NewFront

27 April 2012 12:37 PM, PDT

The Digital Content NewFronts are a series of dog and pony shows digital content platforms, creators and providers put on to showcase their previous, current, and upcoming digital entertainment properties to brand representatives and advertisers. The showcasing is generally the easy part. Companies put together sexy sizzle reels with compelling metrics showing how X many million individuals in Y demographics are watching Z amounts of their programming. The hard part is getting the brand representatives and advertisers in the room to watch the showcase. That’s why many events during the Digital Content NewFronts incorporate things like free cocktails, tuna tartare, and appearances by John Legend, Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, Heidi Klum, and other famous musicians and celebrities. There needs to be some kind of draw to get as many of the people who control the right kinds of advertising dollars in the room as possible. That’s »

Edward Gould: Remembering a Talented YouTuber

27 April 2012 6:39 AM, PDT

The online video industry has seen such exceptional growth over the past few years that it’s hard to remember it’s only in its adolescence. And because it’s only in its adolescence, we have celebrated many triumphs and successes, but not a lot of loss. On Sunday, March 25th, Edward Gould, the creator of the YouTube channel Eddsworld, passed away from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Edward had almost 400,000 passionate subscribers and was a cult YouTube and Newgrounds celebrity. He is going to be dearly missed by family, friends, collaborators and viewers. Gould was best known Eddsworld, an animated show set around three friends in a British town. The program was voiced by Edward and his two friends Matthew Hargreaves and Thomas Ridgewell. A hilarious comedy that launched on YouTube 6 years ago, Edward often appeared on camera to discuss his work. His earnestness immediately resonated with viewers that supported him »

Snapple, NBC Look for ‘Talent’ on YouTube

26 April 2012 9:53 PM, PDT

Howard Stern isn’t the only addition to America’s Got Talent in 2012. Snapple accompanies the King of All Media in joining NBC’s hit reality television series. (Why Snapple? Because the show and the beverage company each, in their own way, search for the best stuff on earth.) And the both of them join the Agt team comprised of judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel, host Nick Canon, and, of course, YouTube. For its third year and running, the world’s largest online video sharing site is partnering up with Agt to find a handful of individuals of any age with mad skills of any variety who want an opportunity to showcase their wares to America by way of broadcast TV (and who also wouldn't mind a shot at fame and $1 million in fortune). It’s way past the deadline to audition to audition to for Agt in person, »

Mark Malkoff Binges On 400 Hours Of Netflix Movies In One Month

26 April 2012 4:51 PM, PDT

Yep, that's over 250 movies. Comedian Mark Malkoff, known for zany stunts like getting six-pack abs in 30 days, racing a NYC bus on a Big Wheel, and sleeping with celebrities (including a pillow fight on a red carpet), has teamed up with My Damn Channel to see how many films he can watch on Netflix Watch Instantly in one month. Malkoff's goal is to watch 250 movies from April 15 to May 14—over 400 hours in a month. For those of you too lazy to do the math, that's 13 hours a day. According to Nielsen, the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day. So 13 hours is a lot. Given eight hours of sleep per day, that leaves only 3 hours left for life. "Last week I didn't leave my apartment for 155 hours," Malkoff told Tubefilter. "I'm currently on day 10 and have watched over 130 hours." The upside? If he gets through 250, it works out to about $0.03 a title. »

Disney, Digitas Present NewFronts Today in NYC

26 April 2012 5:14 AM, PDT

The Digital Content NewFronts continue today in New York City with events from the Disney Interactive Media Group and NewFronts orchestrator and global advertising agency Digitas. Disney is expected to make at least a few announcements about programming related to the $10 to $15 million dollar content partnership the Mouse House announced with YouTube last November. That programming will target youngsters on the world’s largest online video sharing site, as well as give more family and kid-friendly content to the current visitors of Disney.com and its partner sites. My hunch is we’ll get a teaser of upcoming original series along the lines of Disney’s recently announced Power Up with online video sensation and American Music Award New Media Honoree Christina Grimmie. This is the fifth annual NewFront for Digital Content NewFronts founding partner Digitas. Entertainment executives and celebrities slated to be making pitches and/or answering questions from »

25 April 2012 10:59 AM, PDT

Rio Caraeff is the President and CEO of Vevo. His website is an online home to, and distributor of over 50,000 HD-quality music videos from over 11,000 of the most popular musicians around the globe. Those music videos are seen an aggregate of more than three billion times per month by over 250 million global viewers, all of whom spend at least an hour every thirty days watching Vevo programming on Vevo.com, on Vevo’s mobile site, and/or on one of the music video destination’s many distribution outlets. All those stats in the paragraph above are takeaways from Caraeff and Vevo’s stellar presentation at the Digital Content NewFronts (which, among other highlights, featured a closing set by nine-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter John Legend). But one of the most interesting takeaways wasn’t about Caraeff’s company. It was about Caraeff. The under-40-year-old, 20-or-so-year veteran of the music »
