Happy Birthday - Boxwish is one year old today!
15 July 2009 4:14 AM, PDT
Here at Boxwish HQ, we’ve got our glad rags on today as it’s none other than our first birthday! Yes, just 365 short days ago we came into cyber existence with a remit to deliver movie-inspired shenanigans and we’re pretty chuffed to have made it to this exciting landmark. Yet while there are plenty of folk behind the scenes that deserve hearty slaps on the back for their contribution to the site, we want to reserve our biggest thank you for the people that truly make Boxwish what it is – you, the readers. But before we get too blubbery and start reaching for the tissues, let’s take a look back at our first year…
There were massive movie releases that really got you and us excited from Twilight to Quantum of Solace helping us achieve over a million visits. And the stats don’t stop there, we

Win tickets to the London premiere of Inglourious Basterds
15 July 2009 3:15 AM, PDT
“Brad Pitt is a Basterd!” Apparently so are Eli Roth and Diane Kruger. No, we’re not getting nasty, just enjoying some of the tag-lines for the much-hyped return of Quentin Tarantino with Inglourious Basterds. The rip-roaring ensemble World War II action adventure sees a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “the Basterds” hunt down Nazis and led by Pitt’s Lieutenant Aldo Raine, they mean business (“Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps… and I want my scalps!” he hollers). And while the rest of us will have to wait until the 21st August to catch the latest effort from the Chin, one lucky person and a chum can see it almost a month earlier by winning a pair of tickets to the London premiere. Read on for more info.
The competition, run by free London newspaper, The Metro offers the chance to

Fashion fix of the week: Strawberry earrings from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
15 July 2009 2:39 AM, PDT
When it comes to fashion in the Harry Potter film franchise, Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch), the spacey blonde obsessed with Nargles is most definitely following her own rules. Her personal style is quirky to say the least and very much in contrast to the more muted, accessible fashions of female Hogwarts witch, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). But here at Boxwish, we embrace the offbeat ensembles of Luna and have managed to track down a pair of strawberry earrings that we think would be right at home in her eccentric wardrobe from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Okay, so we know that technically Luna doesn’t wear strawberry earrings, rather a pair that looks more like radishes or the fictional dirigible plums. However radish earrings don’t seem to be in this season (I know, a travesty!) and so staying with the fruity theme we’ve branched out to the

Auto of the week: Utilimaster Aeromate from Hotel for Dogs
14 July 2009 3:03 AM, PDT
Recently we’ve been going retro for our auto spot with a 1950s Buick Super from Revolutionary Road and a 1930s Ford V8 from Public Enemies, so for this week’s blog post we’re dragging ourselves back into the present day with a cheery motor from kiddie comedy Hotel for Dogs – the Utilimaster Aeromate. Sure, it lacks the finesse and old-school glamour of these past beauties, but what it lacks in classic charm it makes up for in doggie delights for this is no average delivery van rather one that has undergone a mutt makeover.
Gone is the drab exterior of the Utilimaster Aeromate, replaced with eyebrows above the dual windscreens, a nose, whiskers and pink tongue hanging from the grille and are those ears we spot hanging from either side of the roof? Woof woof! This canine version of “Pimp My Ride” is used by Dave, one of

Merchandise swag: The Private Lives of Pippa Lee book
13 July 2009 3:11 AM, PDT
For those of you that didn’t feel like watching a man play with dildos at the cinema this past weekend in Brüno, there was thankfully another offering – The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. This tender drama starring Robin Wright Penn as the titular Pippa Lee, a woman facing a mid-life meltdown is earning strong reviews and with its fantastic ensemble cast (Alan Arkin, Keanu Reeves, Julianne Moore and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively) is proving to be clever counter-programming in blockbuster-heavy theatres. And if you’ve spent some time in the company of Pippa or are planning on catching the quirky indie soon, why not add to the experience and read the book it’s based on which is this week’s merchandise swag spot.
The novel, like the film is the work of creative talent Rebecca Miller who, not only adapted her book for the big screen but also directed it as well.
