Can Halt and Catch Fire Reboot AMC's Drama Slate?

31 May 2014 9:57 AM, PDT

If you tune in to AMC Sunday night at 10/9c, you'll find a period piece starring a handsome, well-dressed man who, despite having the confidence and silver tongue to sell almost anything, is running from his complicated past. And no, we're not talking about Mad Men or Don Draper.

The show in question is Halt and Catch Fire, a drama set in the "Silicon Prairie" of Dallas, Texas in 1983 that tells the story of the race to build the best personal computer.  And while the surface comparisons to Mad Men may be incidental, it's no surprise that AMC would be looking to recapture some of that show's magic as the network prepares to reboot itself after saying goodbye to its cornerstone property next year.

Where does AMC go from here?

"More than anything, we talk about doing what got us to the dance," AMC president Charlie Collier told TVGuide.com »

First Look: Disney Xd Premieres New Gravity Falls Shorts

30 May 2014 6:26 AM, PDT

As Gravity Falls fans await the second season adventures of Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel Pines, Disney Xd plans to tide them over with two new shorts.

Disney Xd will air the Gravity Falls short "Mabel's Scrapbook: Heist Movie" on Monday, June 2, at 6:59/5:59c; an hour later, it will run "Mabel's Scrapbook: Petting Zoo" at 7:59/6:59c.

Disney renewed the hit animated series, created by young animator Alex Hirsch, for a second season last year. Season 1 premiered on Disney Channel, but the network decided to move Gravity Falls and another cartoon, Wander Over Yonder, to Disney Xd this year. (No return date has been announced yet for Gravity Falls.) Both shows feature a slightly older, edgier tone that likely fits better with the pre-teen Disney Xd crowd.

Weekend TV: Silicon Valley finale, Halt and Catch Fire Premiere

30 May 2014 6:26 AM, PDT

Computer geeks rule this Sunday, as HBO's hilarious Silicon Valley wraps its first season on a triumphant high, while in the very same time period (10/9c), AMC launches the intriguing new drama Halt and Catch Fire, flashing back 30 years to the early days of the 1980s PC revolution. The best bet, as it has been throughout its eight-episode freshman run, is Silicon Valley, introducing an ensemble of such endearing quirkiness that even a decidedly low-tech soul such as myself hangs on every word as timid visionary Richard (Thomas Middleditch, a marvel of quaking anxiety) prepares to unleash the fruits of his "compression algorithm" through an upstart company named Pied Piper.

Game of Thrones' Pedro Pascal: Oberyn's Challenge Is a "F--- You" to the Lannisters

29 May 2014 7:32 PM, PDT

Trust a Dornishman to get excited by impossible odds.

On Sunday's Game of Thrones (9/8c, Hb), Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) will enter into trial by combat against Gregor Clegane, who is nicknamed The Mountain for his ridiculously vast size. The series cast massive Icelandic strongman Hafthor Bjornsson to dwarf his onscreen competitor. "He's nearly a foot taller than me. He's 6-foot-9; I'm 5-foot-11," Pascal tells TVGuide.com. "I think he's nearly three times my weight. He's 420 pounds of muscle. It felt like I was with a giant. And then put him in the armor, and his sword alone was exactly my height. It was incredibly intimidating but also really delightful because I think that the character Oberyn really relishes that kind of challenge."
