Box Office: Catching Fire Breaks Records, Vince Vaughn's Latest Opens Soft

24 November 2013 3:39 PM, PST

Never underestimate the power of Katniss Everdeen.

The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire certainly lived up to its name this weekend, shattering a November record at the box office with an estimated $161.1 million in earnings. Not only is that about $10 million more than the original Hunger Games made in its opening weekend in 2012, but would also make Catching Fire the fourth-highest opening weekend ever, and the top grossing debut for a 2D-only movie, Box Office Mojo reports.

Saturday Night Live: How Did Josh Hutcherson Do as Host?

24 November 2013 8:21 AM, PST

Catching Fire may be igniting the box office, but unfortunately Josh Hutcherson failed to light even a spark on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Perhaps the writers checked out early for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, but whatever the reason, this weekend's episode can be filed under "dud." The show went for the bizarre this week, and some sketches worked (Vanessa Bayer dressed as a turkey), while others flopped (Beck Bennett as an office manager who has the body and mannerisms of a baby). Check out some of the better ones below:

Just as Saul (Mandy Patinkin) seemed to be putting back together his marriage with Mira (Sarita Choudhury), the show threw us a curveball. After Mira broke things off with her former lover Alain Bernard (William Abadie), he ...

Weekend Playlist: Doctor Who and Other TV Legends (Burnett, Cosby), Plus: Red John!

22 November 2013 6:10 AM, PST

Who knew? Few could have foreseen the enduring success of Doctor Who given its inauspicious origins a half-century ago — a fascinating story of pluck, luck and imagination delightfully rendered in An Adventure in Space and Time, a new TV movie (Friday, 9/8c) airing as part of BBC America's 50th-anniversary Who celebration this weekend.

You don't have to be a Whovian to appreciate this jaunty re-creation of a simpler, scrappier time in TV history. A "year-ometer" (cute touch) dials back to 1963, when the staid BBC's brash new head of drama, Canadian showman Sydney Newman (a marvelously uncouth Brian Cox), greenlights a new sci-fi serial to appeal to kids and fickle sports fans. Behind the Scenes of Showtime's Provocative New Drama Masters of Sex

21 November 2013 8:11 PM, PST

Only eight episodes into its first season, Showtime's Masters of Sex has already offered more twists and turns than the Kama Sutra. Audiences seem to like playing Peeping Tom. Ratings have been strong, and the network announced it would renew the show for Season 2.

What's the secret to Sex's success? You can start with the offbeat chemistry of classically trained British thespian Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) and comic actress Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the pioneering researchers who revolutionized the study of sex in the 1950s. "The producers clearly knew what...
