Briefs: Robbie Amell Joins “The Flash,” Elisabeth Hasselbeck Flips Out Over Rosie, And Chris Colfer Secretly Sleep Shops

Birthday shoutouts go to Douglas Booth (above), who is 22, Tom Hanks is 58, and Jimmy Smits is 59.

Robbie Amell has joined The Flash in a recurring role, playing Ronnie Raymond: “In the DC Comics mythology, Raymond is a man who bonds with another to form the nuclear powered super hero, Firestorm.”

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is not happy about Rosie‘s return to The View: “Here in comes to The View the very woman who’s spit in the face of our military, spit in the face of her own network, and, really spit in the face of a person who stood by her and had civilized debates for the time that she was there – coming back with a bunch of control, ready to regain The View with a seat at that table.”

Under The Covers: Help Us Rename This Book

Sure, working here in TheBacklot Blungeon™ (Blog + dungeon) is a never-ending parade of cute puppies and lollipops, but sometimes things get a bit hectic, and we need help from our faithful readers.

The Tptb have given us a trunk filled with moldy copies of Lgbt books, with orders to alphabetize them. Unfortunately, the titles on all the covers have been blacked out! This is where you come in.

We’re giving you the cover art for a book and asking you to create a new title based just on the cover art. We’ll pick our favorite, and announce the winner next Wednesday (along with the real title.)

Take a look at the cover art above and take your best shot!

Here’s last week’s cover

And the winner is … “My super gay Ben Cohen fantasy funtime activity book.”

Congratulations to Dwight!

Is “Days Of Our Lives” Setting Up A WilSon Triangle? Let’s Grasp At Straws!

Remember this Days Of Our Lives scene from a month ago? In the liveblog I jokingly wrote “Omg, they’re setting up Sonny/Ben! Benny! Oh … probably not.”

But in a new interview with Daytime Confidential, Guy Wilson talks about what-ifs:

DC: There has been fan speculation that Ben is gay and there may be a love triangle with Will and Sonny.

Gw: I’m going to have to plead the fifth on that one.

Wait … what? Doesn’t Guy know what “plead the fifth” means? It means we are now free to wildly speculate about a potential Will/Sonny/Ben triangle!

Until now, Ben appears to have had the hots for Abigail, but that hot mess is a ticking time bomb, so who knows where it’s going.

Look, we’re probably grasping at straws here … but until the show starts throwing us more than occasional scraps, we’ll get our hopes up! »

Fox News Ambush Artist Jesse Watters Attends San Francisco Pride

Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com

Jesse Watters (The guy who coined the term “Beyonce voters”) is the one youthful reporter for Fox News, a lone young male in a sea of grey. He often gets sent out to events to try and get people to say things on camera that they’ll regret or can be taken out of context. Bill O’Reilly sent him out to San Francisco Pride, where he talked with Nancy Pelosi, Gavin Newsom, some twinks, fabulous drag queens and cute gay couples. Guess what happened? Nothing. Nobody really said anything awful except Watters. He calls a guy promiscuous, and the guy grins and owns it. The drag queens profess a love of O’Reilly. The only thing scandalous about this were the movie clips they intercut the interviews with, which didn’t befit a news organization, or whatever Fox News thinks it is these days. »

Senatorial Candidate for Human-Dog Marriage

While the slippery slope argument for marriage equality has been falling out of favor among opponents, it still pops up every once in a while – with absurd warnings about siblings marrying, people marrying their pets, etc. But this political ad spoof from Upright Citizens Brigade  imagines a candidate, Ron Spiner, that’s all for human-canine marriage but not, eww, same-sex unions.

“The Night Shift” 1.07 Post Luke

Previously, on The Night Shift

After last week’s pivotal episode, in which Drew was helped out of the closet by a Luke Macfarlane appendage (is there anything they can’t do?), this week sees Drew mostly in the background, as various scenes from Random Hospital Drama Generator happen around him.

We’ve got the pole stripper with a heart of gold, whose gaydar instantly pings around Drew “He’s cute. it’s too bad he’s gay.”

We also get a girl with bulimia, and Krista has some nice scenes as she relates her own experiences about her battle with the illness. But I don’t know what’s the big deal about swallowing a fork. That’s how I managed to steal an entire stainless steel flatware set from Cutlery Corner (I tried for a pepper mill, but my gag reflex is not that developed.)

TV on Tap: Sean Hayes Joins “The Millers,” IFC Wants More “Spoils” and Morgan Fairchild Gets “Hot in Cleveland”

Laverne Cox has booked an appearance on Bravo’s upcoming series Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce. She’ll play a war reporter and Lgbt activist who appears at a marriage equality gala.

Sean Hayes has joined the cast of The Millers next season. He’ll play a new pal of Carol (Margo Martindale) whose presence annoys Carol’s son Nathan (Will Arnett). On one hand, seeing Margo Martindale and Sean Hayes sharing scenes sounds amazing. I’m just not sure it will be so amazing on The Millers, considering the episodes I’ve seen.

From Sean Saves the World to The Millers. Ohboy.

With its 100th episode here, TVLine looks back at the Pretty Little Liars‘s pilot episode. Ah, remember when Aria was the mature and worldly one?

EW reports that Elizabeth Mitchell will be appearing on Once Upon a Time as part of the drama’s Frozen-inspired storyline. »

Maybe ‘that’s so gay’ is actually ok for young people to say. Call me an old fart, but I’m going to have to vote “no.”

So someone named “Nash Grier” has almost 9 million Vine followers, and he’s apparently loved by tween girls everywhere because of his dreamy blue eyes (or at least, that’s what I learned spending ten seconds on his twitter feed). So would it surprise anyone that he likes to scream out homophobic slurs about HIV? Of course not. I’m not embedding the Vine because it autoplays, and I don’t feel like »

Catching Up With Meredith Baxter

8 July 2014 11:12 AM, PDT

Meredith Baxter has been a TV star since 1972 when she starred in a CBS series called Bridget Loves Birney. She went on to become beloved sitcom Mom Elyse Keaton in the long running Family Ties and then followed that by starring in (and sometimes producing) a string of successful TV movies. (My Breast, A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story and many more.)

Baxter’s successful career belied a sometimes turbulent personal life. She battled through breast cancer, domestic violence and alcoholism and even navigated a late-in-life realization that she was a lesbian.

We caught up with the actress to discuss her life today as well as her highly anticipated new series, MTV’s Finding Carter, which premieres tonight at 10/9c

Big Brother housemates Frankie (left) and Zach

Close relationships on reality shows between gay men and straight men are rare and tend to draw a lot of attention (see e.g. Ronnie Kroell and Ben Dichiara of Make Me a Supermodel; Charlie & Marcus of Survivor: Gabon) .

This season of Big Brother is making its own contribution to the “hobromance” genre with Frankie Grande and Zach Rance

Sweet, but already there may be trouble in paradise with these two lovebirds

“Major Crimes” 3.05 “Who Are The Village People?”

8 July 2014 5:59 AM, PDT

Rusty Beck (wonderfully played by Graham Patrick Martin) has been an integral part of TNT’s Major Crimes since, well, before the show even aired. He made his debut on the series finale of The Closer, and was brought back for the spinoff, and we’ve spent the last two and a half seasons watching his journey.

Last night’s episode was a pivotal one for Rusty, as he gathered the courage to come out to his fiends in the squad room, and thanks to out showrunner James Duff, it was handled without histrionics, and with humor and sensitivity.

The episode centered around a therapy session Rusty has with Dr. Bowman (played by the out Bill Brochtrup), and Rusty’s coming out is told through a case the Major Crimes Unit is investigating.

Previously on Teen Wolf…. The much beloved Sour Wolf was turned into a totes adorable Twink Wolf for reasons no sane human being could possibly understand. The Hales were revealed as one-percenters just before they were totally robbed by a Mysterious Person. Berzerkers showed up and hurt Scott’s feelings so bad he couldn’t get up and so Twink Wolf had to kick their asses for him, which turned him back into Sour Wolf, only now with golden wolfy eyes. Four Ryan Murphy Spinoffs That Should Star Chris Colfer

7 July 2014 11:20 AM, PDT

We were all shocked when Chris Colfer tweeted his dismissal from Glee, and then (some of us) were relieved when it turned out to be a Twitter hacker hoax.

But with Glee ending next season, it’s not too early to start thinking about Chris’ future on TV, and because Glee creator Ryan Murphy like to keep it in the family, we have a few ideas for how Chris can continue to be a part of the Murphy stable.

These four spinoffs of famous Ryan Murphy shows don’t exist … yet … but he should feel free to start developing them now, and they’re offered free of charge. Because we’d love to keep seeing Chris on primetime TV.

Brandon Routh Will Play Superhero Again On Season Three Of “Arrow”

7 July 2014 10:34 AM, PDT

Brandon Routh is one of only a handful of actors to play Superman on the big screen, and while Superman Returns had its share of problems (like that little Superbrat), Brandon was not one of them, as he did everything that could be done with the Superman he was given. And then some … if those rumors about having to hide his superpackage were true.

So years later, it’s good to know Brandon isn’t afraid to go that route again, as TV Line is reporting that Brandon has been cast in a major recurring role in Season Three of Arrow … as DC Comics superhero Ray Palmer, aka The Atom.

An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery. »

Get Ready For Ultimate Slash Madness!

7 July 2014 8:45 AM, PDT

Can you believe it has been a year since our last Ultimate Slash Madness tournament? Last year’s event brought in over 9 million votes plus more than 25,000+ user comments, countless tweets and an avalanche of #slashmadness Tumblr postings.

We launched this annual tournament back in 2012 to celebrate fandom’s most popular fantasy m/m couples. Since then, for better or for worse, references to “slash”, “shipping”, “Otp”, “fandom” and the like have busted out of Tumblr and other online fan hangouts and now are common references in mainstream media and embedded in popular culture. Actors and TV showrunners comment on it, tweet about it, cheer it on… and in some cases probably wish it would simmer down. (It’s true, all that fan fervor for certain non-canon pairings might get a little frustrating for actors and writers if that’s all that anyone wants to ask them about.)

Still, the heart wants what it wants. »
