Oldboy Takes a Beating at the Box Office; The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Cooks Up a Thanksgiving Feast

1 December 2013 2:24 PM, PST

Just $1.25 million over five days. Yep, that's the dismal take Spike Lee's Oldboy (review here) brought in during the holiday weekend. Sure, it only opened in 583 locations, but still. Read on for details.

Box Office Mojo reported the news that Lee's remake of the Korean classic took in just $1.25 million for the five-day frame ($850,000 three-day). That's well below expectations and really just a fraction of the film's $30 million budget. Oldboy came in 17th in the top 20.

In the number one spot is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with a weekend gross of $74,500,000 (three-day), bringing it to a whopping $296,500,000 since its release. It also obliterated a Thanksgiving weekend record. With $110.1 million from Wednesday to Sunday, the blockbuster sequel destroyed the five-day Thanksgiving weekend record held for the past 12 years by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ($82.4 million).

Could all the negative press and weird goings-on have added to Oldboy's woes? »

Is a Big Screen Version of The Last of Us on its Way?

30 November 2013 1:40 PM, PST

You may recall that someone recently cut together a six-hour online movie version of The Last of Us video game, but if you're still jonesing for more, this latest news about a possible big screen adaptation should be right up your alley.

Per IGN, Sony has registered a pair of website domain names that suggest a movie adaptation of its hit PS3 exclusive The Last of Us (review here) might be - big might be - under consideration.

The domains TheLastOfUs-Movie.com and TheLastOfUsMovie.net were both registered on November 25th by Sony's online brand protection agency, MarkMonitor, while the registrant's email has a Sony Pictures address.

So, take that for what you will, and look for more as/if it comes.

About the Game

The Last of Us tells the story of Joel, a survivor of the savage cordyceps virus infection which has plunged the USA into a chillingly-authentic post-apocalyptic hell. »

Will Spike Lee Do the Right Thing in Poster Art Dispute?

30 November 2013 1:34 PM, PST

It's been a tough weekend for Spike Lee's Oldboy (review). Not only is the film getting hammered at the box office, expected to rake in only around $2 million, but the alleged stolen poster art fiasco is just adding to the negativity surrounding the film.

We told you here about designer Juan Luis Garcia and his artwork for the Spike Lee remake. Essentially, he designed some concepts for the film, the ad agency handling the movie told him that Spike loved a few of the designs and that they would be used as key art, but when it came time to pay Garcia for his work, the agency balked but decided to use some strikingly similar artwork. You can see the examples below.

The Weinsteins Entering a New Dimension with TV Projects Based on The Mist and Sin City

30 November 2013 12:49 PM, PST

For better or worse the Weinsteins have kept some of our favorite film franchises alive and kicking with their horror arm, Dimension. Now the company Bob and Harvey built is ready to turn its attention to the small screen.

Bob Weinstein revealed some rather interesting info recently to The New York Times. Weinstein said he was developing original projects that would be in tune with his horror and action oriented Dimension brand, along with several shows based on movies he has overseen for the company. He is preparing a pilot based on the “Scream” films for MTV, for instance, and developing a proposed 10-part series with Frank Darabont based on Dimension’s film version of Stephen King’s “The Mist.” That's not all though as he is also hoping to quickly follow the August release of the film Sin City: A Dame to Die For, directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, »

B-Sides: Witches Are a Dangerous Type in The Craft

30 November 2013 9:30 AM, PST

Remember the band Letters to Cleo? If so, odds are you grew up in the 1990s. Few bands scream “Nineties” like Letters to Cleo. They were a perfect choice to provide a B-Sides for a motion picture about teenage witches just learning their craft.

Back before there was a television channel that filled up its airwaves with show after show about attractive teenagers coming to grips with the good and bad aspects of their supernatural powers, there was a movie entitled The Craft that was pretty much a progenitor to everything The CW network broadcasts on a daily basis today.

The Craft told the story of four high school girls (Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True) that dabble in the dark arts and develop witchy abilities that at first benefit them and then threaten to destroy them when one goes mad with power.

Marc Forster Clarifies Decision to Change World War Z's Ending

29 November 2013 4:17 PM, PST

When World War Z hit home video back in September, we were bummed to discover that the much-publicized alternate ending of the film, which was completely re-shot for the finished product, wasn't included with the release or even mentioned in any of the special features.

As Uncle Creepy wrote in his review of the World War Z Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, it was as if the whole thing never even existed.

For those that have been waiting for some sort of explanation, director Marc Forster has just offered one up to the folks over at Empire. They caught up with him at Poland's Camerimge Festival of Cinematography and pressed him for answers. "Basically, originally there was a third act that I thought didn't work," he explained. "As we were shooting, we were discussing it and rewriting and rewriting it."

First Hellions Image Is a True Blood Bath

29 November 2013 1:02 PM, PST

Even though we're one month removed from that magical time of year, Halloween is still very much on our minds here at Dread Central. That being said, this first image from Bruce McDonald's Hellions should get you back in the spirit of things.

In the movie Robert Patrick plays Corman, a hardened cop who winds up protecting a teenager (Chloe Rose) on All Hallows' Eve. If Bruce McDonald sounds familiar, it's because he's the twisted genius behind Pontypool, which means Hellions is already a must see.

The horror/thriller also stars Rossif Sutherland ("Reign"), Luke Bilyk ("Degrassi: The Next Generation"), and Rachel Wilson ("Republic of Doyle").

Whizbang FilmsFrank Siracusa is producing the script from Pascal Trottier (The Colony). No word on when it'll be released yet, but considering its holiday setting, expect it sometime in fall 2014.

Foycast Xiv - Maniac Cop Blue Friday Special Edition

29 November 2013 8:00 AM, PST

Black Friday just became Blue Friday thanks to Blue Underground’s Blu-ray releases of Maniac Cop 2 & 3. I asked Matt Fini to join me for what I intended to be a 20-minute audio review covering the two special editions; 64 minutes later we had the makings of a Foycast.

Be warned: It begins with me rapping.

Anyone who has read my writings or listened to Dinner for Fiends or the Foycast over the years should already be well aware of my love for Maniac Cop 2. Love of this magnitude cannot be adequately conveyed with mere words on the printed paper or scrolling text on a computer screen. That’s why I asked fellow Maniac Cop fan Matt Fini to join me to record a short audio review that quickly exploded into an hour-long Foycast. I was a fool to think we could cover the awesomeness that is Maniac Cop 2 »
