Netflix Horrors: Recommends & the Latest Titles Added to Instant 10/24

24 October 2014 1:56 PM, PDT

“Netflix Horrors” is a regular column in which Shock Till You Drop alerts you to the latest genre titles to hit the VOD service. For all previous updates, click here. Keep in mind, of course, that Netflix rotates titles or pulls them - sometimes they'll reappear at a later date so if you're sifting through previous updates and cannot find a title, it may have very well been pulled.

Darknet is available as of today. This is the anthology horror series about a website called "Darknet" that connects a series of terror tales. The series is adapted from the cult Japanese television series, Tori Hada, by Vincenzo Natali (Splice, Cube) and Steven Hoban (Black Christmas, Ginger Snaps).

These Awesome Horror Movie Death Montages Will Get You in the Halloween Spirit

24 October 2014 12:37 PM, PDT

I love clip reels. If you get the right editor and he or she combines it with the right rhythm and music, you have something highly entertaining, and possibly supremely gory (depending on the subject matter), on your hands.

That said, I wanted to bring your attention to a handful of awesome clip reels that were edited by James Branscome for Beyond Fest, which took place last month in Los Angeles. These themed montages played before select films and they usually brought the house down.

Branscome posted his most recent montage, An Eye for Horror, today. There's also: Cannibal Chunk Blowers, In a Flash of the Blade, Dummy Drops, and Monster Mash.

Werewolves on the Loose in the Trailer for Late Phases

24 October 2014 12:21 PM, PDT

Late Phases, Adrian Garcia Bogliano's English-language directorial debut, now has a trailer, courtesy of distributor Dark Sky Films.

Bogliano previously helmed Penumbra, Cold Sweat and Here Comes the Devil.

Crescent Bay is not the ideal place to spend one’s golden years, especially since the once-idyllic retirement community has been beset by a series of deadly animal attacks from the ominous forest surrounding it.

Review: Ouija Favors Cheap Scares Over Genuine Fear

24 October 2014 11:04 AM, PDT

Is it scary? No. Is it occasionally startling? Occasionally, but it’s so focused on getting that startle that it gives up on anything approaching suspense.

It all starts off well enough when young ingénue Debbie (Henning) suddenly and surprisingly hangs herself in her living room. As catalyst, it’s a good one. The idea of something from the outside taking over your motor control and forcing you to self-harm is both viscerally and existentially horrifying (particularly if the victim is aware of what is happening to them). It also allows for the introduction of Debbie’s friends without much of the meet-cute and knowing cleverness which has been thrust on the teen foci of horror films since Scream. Debbie’s friends are devastated by her death and in their attempts to grieve they talk to each other like real human beings at not characters from a John Hughes film. »

The things you find on Instagram... The prints you see via our gallery here have been popping up in my feed, so I had to track down the artist and see what they were all about.

The man behind illustrations is Gabrial Hernandez of Worthy Enemies. He has reimagined some of the big contemporary icons of our time like Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Pennywise and Michael Myers. Prints of these bad boys are going to be made available via the Worthy Enemies site here. Right now, they're just listed as "coming soon" but keep your eyes peeled!

Greatest Movie Death: The Terminator

24 October 2014 10:00 AM, PDT

The (very belated) "death" of the T-800 in The Terminator (1984) - I know this is not strictly a human death but it lingered in the consciousness long after the film had finished.

I saw the film on VHS in 1986 and had No Idea what the story was about or even if the guy from Conan The Barbarian was gonna play a good guy or a bad guy (Nb - back then, it took anywhere from a year to 18 months for a cinema film to come out on video in the UK).

24 October 2014 9:27 AM, PDT

The buzz surrounding The Canal is pretty strong. And because Shock played a hand in bringing this UK supernatural thriller to the U.S., I just wanted to remind you the film is now available on VOD via iTunes, Amazon and other select avenues. In fact, the film recently cracked the iTunes top 20 horror films, which is pretty fantastic for our first theatrical release with The Orchard.

Producer Says The Crow Remake Will Fly Next Spring

24 October 2014 7:37 AM, PDT

Hey, remember that 2013 interview we conducted at Comic-Con where we learned The Crow redo was going to begin shooting fall of 2013? Well, that never happened. The planned new film has been plagued with false starts, but maybe there's hope?

While attending the Abu Dhabi Film Festival to collect a lifetime achievement award, veteran producer Edward R. Pressman told The Hollywood Reporter that production on his long-awaited remake of The Crow will begin production “in the spring” and boldly referred to it as “the anti-Spider-Man.”

More news springing from the "horror on television" crypt... ABC is apparently at work on a new series inspired by The Phantom of the Opera.

Desperate Housewives' Marc Cherry is overseeing the show which is a contemporary take on the Gaston Leroux novel. Says Variety: "The ABC rendition is billed as revolving around the cutthroat world of the music biz and will incorporate musical moments into story lines in the same vein as the ABC drama Nashville."

Editorial: ‘Trick or Treat, Motherf*cker!’ – Revisiting Halloween: Resurrection

23 October 2014 11:35 AM, PDT

As anyone who follows the genre knows, no horror villain can ever be considered dead. Final Chapters seldom stick to the whole “final” thing and any on screen death, no matter how decisive it may appear, is easily undone as long as a franchise can still be exploited. Given that, it seems inevitable that, despite his long absence from the screen, we haven’t seen the last of Michael Myers. But despite the almost-certainty of Michael’s return, the question of from which point the series will actually continue from is not a simple one.

Putting aside any debates over the artistic merits of Rob Zombie’s Halloween entries, it’s simply factual to say that they exist apart from any other films in the series.

Fox Orders Modern-Day Frankenstein Pilot from Rand Ravich

23 October 2014 9:14 AM, PDT

The race to run the revived dead body that is Frankenstein right back into the ground continues unabated, as Deadline reports that Fox has committed to a pilot titled simply “Frankenstein” written by Rand Ravich (NBC’s “Crisis”). The new show, described as a “grounded sci-fi drama” loosely inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel, centers…

Shock Interview: Rob Zombie on the World of 31 & Crowd Funding

23 October 2014 8:48 AM, PDT

The last day of Rob Zombie's crowd funding campaign for 31 is closing in. Appropriately, it ends on Halloween day. With only eight days left (at the time of this writing), Zombie is making the press rounds to give the campaign one final push. (I'll let the FanBacked page do the talking in terms of the incentives fans get for contributing to the film.) And when Shock was approached and asked to speak with the writer-director about 31 I wanted to get a bit more information about the film itself which seems to promise total mayhem on a level we haven't seen in Zombie's previous works like House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects and The Lords of Salem.

Over the last few weeks, Zombie has been offering glimpses at the violent world of 31 via conceptual art. The dynamic sketches by Alex Horley have introduced us to the many characters that populate »

American Horror Story: Freak Show Recap 402 – Edward Mordrake Part 1

23 October 2014 6:51 AM, PDT

In typical American Horror Story fashion, Halloween gets special treatment. This week's episode was nearly an hour and a half long, and was only the first of two parts.

Here we meet Stanley and Esmerelda, a pair of hucksters who open the show posing as a doctor and his protege, attempting to sell a “real” baby Sasquatch specimen to a museum of oddities. Much like the Fiji Mermaid, baby Sasquatch was a fake, and the duo were attempting to turn a quick buck. The museum curator does suggest that if they bring her a new specimen, one that is real, they would be paid handsomely and she “wouldn’t ask questions.” Stanley, the brains of the operation, decides they should go find a freak show, and head to Florida.
