23 November 2012 7:57 AM, PST

What began as a series of scary short stories posted to Reddit has become a brush with Hollywood for one author.  Dathan Auerbach has been using Reddit's No Sleep sub-category to post his horror fiction. This endeavor led Auerbach to collect his short stories and mold them into a novel called Penpal, published earlier this year.

Auerbach took to Reddit recently to reveal that Penpal has been optioned by Rich Middlemas, producer of the 2011 award-winning documentary Undefeated.

Auerbach writes, "Rich has just started shopping the book around in an attempt to get it set up in Hollywood, so we've still got a ways to go, but I'm hopeful that we'll get there."

22 November 2012 5:57 AM, PST

*Updated* Is This A Jaeger from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim?

21 November 2012 9:15 PM, PST

I suppose only those who saw the Pacific Rim Comic-Con footage could answer that headline, however, there's a video going around right now for the FX outfit Mirada and it features a shot of a giant robot - or "Jaeger" - that may or may not be from Guillermo del Toro's aforementioned film.

Mirada is a boutique production house co-founded by Del Toro, so that backs up suspicion that this may be connected to the film, even if it is an early FX test.  You'll find the video inside; the footage in question arrives 1:15 in.

Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.

Shock Video: Hitchcock Director Sacha Gervasi

20 November 2012 10:00 PM, PST

There have been many great biopics about famous people we all think we know so well, and the best of them often find one particular pivotal period in that person's life that had a dramatic effect on their legacy.

That is the case with Hitchcock, the new film starring Anthony Hopkins as the legendary "master of suspense" Alfred Hitchcock, a filmmaker whose very name has become synonymous with dark and shadowy thrillers. What many may not know is how much his wife Alma Reville, played in the movie by Helen Mirren, contributed to and influenced everything he did, even doing rewrites on his scripts uncredited.

The film takes place during the period around the time when Hitchcock was inspired by the murders of Ed Gein and a book by Robert Bloch to make the movie Psycho, starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles, played by James D'Arcy, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel, »

No Child is Safe in the First Clip from The Host 2

20 November 2012 2:57 PM, PST

A sequel to Bong Joon-ho's creature feature The Host has long been in development.  The last we heard anything about it was in late 2011 when it was reported we might see The Host 2 arrive in 2013.  And it appears that might be fact.

The first clip from the film surfaced at Twitch and we have it waiting for you inside.  The clip features a family car ride along a dam that turns to terror when a very familiar-looking creature surfaces and goes on the attack.

Because news has been so sporadic for this title, we're not entirely certain who's in the director's seat (a few names have been bandied about).  We'll track some more info down; in the meantime, enjoy the clip with a visual FX breakdown

Starving? Here Are Five Horror Movies to Help Whip Up a Thanksgiving Appetite!

20 November 2012 1:00 PM, PST

One could probably name on one hand the genre films that take their inspiration from the Thanksgiving holiday and even then, the most popular horror offering isn't even a feature film but a faux grindhouse trailer directed by Eli Roth appropriately called Thanksgiving (pictured).  Could one say that there is a great Thanksgiving-themed horror film out there?  I don't think so.  At least, not yet.  Roth's Thanksgiving hasn't been made into a film yet (but it's supposed to be).

With that in mind, I reflected on a film I often turn to at this time of year and asked the rest of the Shock team to join me in giving thanks to a handful of horror movies that focused on hunger or "dangerous eats" in one form or another.

So, if you have an appetite for horror this Thursday, dig into one of these films!
