Mom Says Murder-Suicide Attempt on Her 2 Children Was a ‘Harmless’ Cry for Help: Reports

A Pennsylvania mom convicted in the attempted murder-suicide of herself and her two children by carbon monoxide poisoning said she meant her actions as a cry for help to escape an allegedly abusive husband, according to multiple news reports.

Melissa Scholl, 34, of Wilkes-Barre Township, was sentenced Monday to serve 10 to 30 years in prison, with 10 years’ probation to follow, reports The Citizens’ Voice, the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader and local TV station Wnep.

“I truly thought I would gain a sympathetic ear,” Scholl said in court at her sentencing. “I thought my act was harmless. I truly did.”
