Jodi Arias Jury Fails to Decide on Death Penalty

A Phoenix jury on Thursday declared that it could not agree on whether to recommend death or life in prison for Jodi Arias for the 2008 slaying her lover, Travis Alexander. Arias, dressed in black, tearfully held her hand to her face as the jury's decision was read and Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens set a June 20 hearing to prepare for a penalty-phase retrial that could start July 18. The mistrial does not undermine the jury's first-degree murder conviction. But a new jury, very possibly in a different city, will be asked to hear testimony only on the issue of »

She was born on May 23, 1899. And she's still going strong. Jeralean Talley of Inkster, Mich., turned 114 on Thursday. It's her first birthday since she officially became the oldest person living in the United States, after Elsie Thompson passed away in March at 113. "I feel okay," Talley told Time magazine on the eve of her birthday. Her secret to longevity? Watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Wheel of Fortune, listening to baseball on the radio, and enjoying her favorite foods - including potato salad, honey buns, McDonald's Chicken McNuggets and Wendy's chili. While she spends most of her time sitting these days, »

What We're Reading This Weekend: Fun Fiction for the Start of Summer

What makes a great beach read? Romance, escape, and high odds for a happy ending - plus enough suspense to keep those pages breezily turning. Share your thoughts on the novels we'll be losing ourselves in this Memorial Day - and let us know what you're reading. Julie Dam, Assistant Managing Editor Her Pick: Pastors' Wives by Lisa Takeuchi Cullen I have two little kids so my reading list is usually in the Maisy and Pinkalicious vein. But this holiday weekend I'm digging into Pastors' Wives, a lively, funny novel set at a Southern evangelical megachurch. Even for non-religious readers »

Katie Holmes Goes Nuts - Over Squirrel

Now that's what you call animal magnetism. While filming a scene on the N.Y.C. set of Mania Days Tuesday, Katie Holmes came face-to-face with a squirrel - and that's when things went nuts. Testing her quick reflexes, the actress seemingly tried to pet her new furry friend at one point. (As a New Yorker, we'd think she would know better than to try and touch a rodent!) The film, her first major movie role since splitting from husband Tom Cruise, stars Holmes, 34, as a manic-depressive who finds romance with a fellow patient at a psychiatric hospital. Perhaps going »

Morgan Freeman Falls Asleep During On-Air Interview

Being God is exhausting! During an interview with Fox affiliate Q13 in Seattle, to promote his new movie Now You See Me, Morgan Freeman appeared to be napping on-camera. This left costar Michael Caine to field the questions from anchors Kaci Aitchison and Bill Wixey about the crime thriller, which concerns a group of magicians who use their skills to rob banks. About halfway through the interview, Freeman shuts his eyes before clips from the movie are shown. When the camera returns to Freeman, his head is down and his eyes are shut, prompting the station to later note on its website, »

President Barack Obama's Prom Photos Released

Prom season might be coming to an end, but it lives on in photographs for President Barack Obama. Time has unearthed snapshots from the President's 1979 prom in Hawaii. The previously unpublished photos of a 17-year-old Obama on the night of his senior prom came from Obama's classmate, Kelli Allman (née McCormack), who is pictured second from left. As a student at Punahou School, Obama spent his days studying, playing basketball (as a player on the varsity team) and hanging out with his friends, she says. Allman shares, "It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up, and everyone was smiling. »

The Daily Treat: Nothing You Do or Say Will Cheer Up Grumpy Cow

We thought we had seen it all when it comes to displeased, unsatisfied and generally non-smiley animals after we came face to face with Grumpy Cat. But then we saw this cow. We don't know why this Highland cow calf, Snowy (who we will affectionately call Grumpy Cow), is so angry. Born to two brown Highland cattle, Snowy's rare coat of fluffy white fur is something to smile about in itself. Perhaps the grass tasted a little bitter this particular day, or maybe Snowy's just a little bit upset about the demise of Robsten. (True love exists, we promise!) Either way, »

Sathwik Karnik, 12, Wins National Geographic Bee

When Sathwik Karnik of Plainville, Mass., was about 6, his mother began challenging him and his older brother, Karthik, to her own version of hide-and-seek - using an atlas. The boys would comb through the book, trying to be the first to find a city or landmark. The games paid off when Karthik, now 15, made the finals of the National Geographic Bee in 2011 and 2012. But it was Sathwik who finished the job, calmly answering questions about obscure island chains, bodies of water, global trade and culture. The result? Sathwik, at 12 years old, won the 25th annual geography bee Wednesday - thanks »
