Superhero TV shows and movies have taken over our lives. These days, while you're waiting on the new Avengers movie to come out, you're probably watching The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow or one of the many other superhero TV shows that are currently out there. As much as we love superhero shows, doesn't it feel like things start to repeat themselves in each of them? It seems like each show does certain things in its story that we've already seen a million times. We get it, there are certain formulas that work, so why screw with that? Still, there's something to be said about breaking the rules to keep things original. Here are five of those rules superhero shows should really consider breaking.

'The Vampire Diaries' Recap: An Unfriendly Face Returns to Mystic Falls

17 February 2017 12:00 PM, PST

Previously on The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie gave Stefan the cure after he killed Enzo. Alaric and Damon found the weapon they think will kill Cade, and Kai showed up seemingly out of nowhere.

This week's episode, titled "The Lies Will Catch Up with You," doesn't really offer the action we've seen in the last few chapters. Recent episodes have upped the ante in revealing the writer's endgame for the series, whereas this one is more about laying some exposition groundwork for the homestretch. None of the character's storylines really overlap, save for a few phone calls, leaving a feeling of disconnect and lack of urgency when our favorite players should be working together toward a common goal.

Why Jughead -- Not Archie -- Should Be the Real Star of 'Riverdale'

17 February 2017 3:57 AM, PST

Archie Andrews is the face of Riverdale. The comics on which Riverdale are based have almost always put Archie's name somewhere in the title. The company itself, Archie Comics, bears Archie's name. Archie is meant to be the star -- but on Riverdale a much more interesting character has emerged, Jughead. While Kj Apa's portrayal of Archie is fine, it is Jughead who has really shined in the dark reimagining. Riverdale would be a much more solid show if the main character reins were handed over to Jughead.

'Arrow' Poll: Should There Be More Political Stories?

17 February 2017 3:18 AM, PST

Arrow has been known to divide its audience. Whether it is something like the death of Laurel Lance, the degree to which the show emphasizes Oliver's romantic life or just that it's a superhero show that everyone has opinions about, Arrow can stir up controversy. Arrow caused a type of fan division with their most recent episode, "Spectre of the Gun," when the season 5 episode got very political as the show handled the issue of gun control. Opinions about "Spectre of the Gun" range from it being one of the worst episodes of the series to one of its more interesting and daring. However you feel about "Spectre of the Gun," it does raise the question, should Arrow should do more political episodes or just keep it as a one-time (maybe misguided) effort?

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Richard and Bailey Go to War

16 February 2017 1:57 PM, PST

So, where to begin? Meredith Grey was not in this episode. Neither was Alex Karev. I think that's got to be a first. Also a first? An episode in which romantic shenanigans took a complete backseat to the practice of medicine and the training of surgeons. Yep. You read that right. There were no hookups. There were no supply closet trysts. There were no professions of love. "It Only Gets Much Worse" was all about the medicine as the theme of "firsts" came to the fore: first day on the job, first lead surgery, first loss of a patient. At the center of it all was the tug of war between old and new, attendings and residents, Webber and Minnick Bailey. This week the gloves came off and there were casualties.

'Riverdale' Interview: Cole Sprouse on Jughead's Homelessness

16 February 2017 1:48 PM, PST

After spending the first three episodes primarily in the background, Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) life came to the forefront during Riverdale Season 1 Episode 4, "Chapter Four: The Last Picture Show." He passionately worked to save the town's drive-in theater without success. Initially, it appeared his affinity for the theater was nostalgic in nature, but it turned out to be much more.

BuddyTV visited the Riverdale set last week and spoke with Sprouse about Jughead's homelessness and working with Skeet Ulrich (Scream), who was revealed to play Jughead's father and the leader of the Southside Serpents.

Why 'Arrow' Needs to Give More Characters Flashback Stories

16 February 2017 7:00 AM, PST

"Spectre of the Gun" is far from the first time that Arrow has given a flashback storyline to someone other than Oliver Queen. In season 2, while Oliver was involved, Sara had a pretty heavy flashback storyline in "Heir to the Demon." Season 2's "Suicide Squad" handed things over almost solely to Diggle in the flashback and the same is true of season 3's "The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak." "Spectre of the Gun" involved another character getting their flashback spotlight with Rene. The episode should start a new trend for Arrow. Every character should be getting their share of the flashback wealth.
