Banderas Blasted for Mexican Hero Role

31 December 2002

Hollywood star Antonio Banderas is under fire from the Mexican public for his portrayal of Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa in a new film. Audiences are not taking kindly to the idea of the stout, pistol-packing hero of the 1910-1917 revolution being played by a Spaniard for an American audience - two nationalities Villa loathed. Banderas filmed the HBO movie And Starring Pancho Villa As Himself at a time when Hollywood's treatment of history is becoming a sensitive point for Mexicans. Actress Salma Hayek recently starred as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in a Hollywood movie filmed entirely in Mexican-accented English. Adolfo Lopez Villarreal - who founded the Francisco Villa Popular Front in Mexico City in 1988 - is one who's unhappy about the HBO film. He says, "They should have given the role to a Mexican. I like Banderas, but he's a Spaniard. I think there are Mexican actors who could do the role well." Student activist America Del Valle adds, "It's very Hollywood, to use big- name actors who have never participated in real-life political movements to depict revolutionaries. I'm sure they'll do Che (Guevara) next. It's playing marketing with the truth. I just hope they'll respect the historical reality, and not paint him all black or all white." »

Russell's Expensive Haircut

31 December 2002

Hollywood megastar Russell Crowe pushed up the budget of his new film Master And Commander by $150,000 - just to get his hair cut. The Oscar-winning actor left the crew of the Napoleonic war epic displeased after his demands and requirements pushed spending up considerably. Crowe, who has recently become engaged to girlfriend Danielle Spencer, demanded that his favorite Sydney based hairdresser Belinda Jeffery was flown in first class every time he needed her and all her hotel and expenses costs were footed by the production budget. A source says, "Russell was throwing his weight around on set from the word go. He did not get on with the hairdresser who had been provided for him and threw a strop until the producers agreed he could fly Belinda in whenever she was needed. They had to agree to fly her first class and as she had a busy salon in Sydney they had to fly her back too. It cost them at least $150,000 and really it was something that could easily have been done by any hairdresser. He insisted that Belinda was the only one he wanted to touching his hair. The rumor on set was that he was going grey and he was pretty sensitive about it." »

'Friends: The Movie'?

31 December 2002

Hit American TV sitcom Friends may make its big screen debut next year - complete with all six famous cast members and a raunchier adult slant. The Emmy-winning show has already had its television run extended by a year after all six stars agreed to a tenth season and it is thought that the promise of a movie spin-off convinced them all to stay on board. The film antics of the New York buddies will be far more risque than the televised shows and could include sex and nudity. A studio source says, "Without those pesky American television network censors, it will be much more adult and will even include nudity." Reports suggest that hunky air head Joey Tribbiani played by Matt LeBlanc will be the one to disrobe first. The source says, "Matt has a huge female following, not to mention gay men. They will likely flock to the movie to see him bare all." Actors Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer were already willing to extend the show's award winning run but both Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston had misgivings due to their outside success in Hollywood. A source says, "They all agreed to do one more year after the movie deal was struck. They all want to be movie stars - that's why they caved in." However, the tenth season will run slightly shorter than its predecessors with only 18 episodes compared to the usual 22. All cast members will be paid $930,000 per episode and will net a percentage of the film's profits. The source continues, "They're being paid $9 million each for the film, plus a percentage of the profits and since it will likely be a major hit, they stand to walk away with a fortune." »

Eminem's Mother Lays Into Basinger

31 December 2002

Hollywood stunner Kim Basinger has incurred the wrath of 8 Mile co-star Eminem's mother - because Debbie Mathers claims she portrays her falsely. The film, which is loosely based on the rapper's troubled life prior to his incredible success, includes Basinger's character Stephanie Smith who is a direct representation of the Lose Yourself rapper's real life mother. His grandmother Betty Kresin has spoken of how upset Debbie is after watching the film, particularly because in Basinger's onscreen counterpart sports a bad hairstyle. Kresin says, "I know Debbie has been to see the film because she was so upset by it. Kim has a beer in her hand in the film but Debbie hardly drinks. She was unhappy about that. I've never seen alcohol in Debbie's life apart from some of the low-life men she has known. Kim's hair is so stringy in the film but Debbie always kept hers perfect. She never had one hair out of place - her kids couldn't hug her because she was worried about her hair getting messed up. Debbie keeps her home perfectly clean, but in the film Kim's trailer home is a complete mess. She told me Kim should have kept her hair good, her trailer clean and not drink beer. It has turned into the battle of the blondes. Marshall says at the beginning of the film that it is fictional but I can see why Debbie has taken it so personally. I can see much of it is based on his life." »
