Jamie Lee's Teeth Trauma

29 December 2000

Jamie Lee Curtis has learned never to show her teeth when she smiles - because they used to be disgusting. The actress has revealed for the first time her teeth were permanently "greenish-grey" while she was growing up, because her mother Janet Leigh took the strong antibiotic tetracycline when she was pregnant, and Jamie learned to cover her less than gleaming gnashers. Her teeth were eventually capped when she was 21, but she admits the habit of keeping them out of sight was tough to shake. She says, "The smirk serves as a bit of a mask. "I always thought I was this little pipsqueak with grey teeth, an odd face and no discernible talent." »

Will Goss Die As Villainous Vampire?

29 December 2000

Scriptwriters are refusing to tell Luke Goss if they're going to kill him off in Wesley Snipes' Blade (1998) sequel. The actor plays chief villain vamp Nomack in Blade 2 (2001), which starts filming in Prague, Czech Republic next year, and Goss has agreed to sign a confidentiality agreement not to reveal anything about the plot. And, to make absolutely sure cast members don't blurt out the surprise planned ending, producers are refusing to give them details of what will happen. The role has forced Goss to pull out of plans to appear in another sequel, Matrix 2, The (2002), because it's being shot at the same time as Blade 2 (2001). Spokesman David Wood says, "The Matrix people have taken their time in coming back, and now there's no way Luke can fit both films into his schedule. We're not ruling out a part in Matrix 3, The (2003), however." Meanwhile, Goss teams up with Snipes on January 9th when they start filming "Zig Zag" in Hollywood. Again the former pop star plays a bad guy, this time a corrupt nightclub boss, in the hard-hitting drama. »

Catherine Gets Too Big For Her Rocks

29 December 2000

Feisty film star Catherine Zeta Jones has become the unwelcome target of an array of American journalists. The wife of actor Michael Douglas has been described by New York columnist Liz Smith as behaving like "a real movie queen". At the recent premiere of her new movie, Traffic (2000), Catherine was asked if there were any rhinestones in her earrings. She replied "They're diamonds. Rhinestones? I thought you only got those in Texas." Texan Liz Smith says, "Perhaps Mrs Michael Douglas has never been to Texas. I can assure you, you've never seen bigger, realer rocks than on the wrists, fingers, and necks of Lone Star matrons. Catherine is really something." »

Sean Connery Struggled With Cycling Scene

29 December 2000

Sean Connery went through hell on a bicycle while filming new movie Finding Forrester (2000) - because the heat was sweltering. The Scottish actor, who plays a reclusive writer in the movie, had to cycle up and down Fifth Avenue in New York for one scene, and it proved to him he isn't as fit as he used to be. He says, "It was crazy, because the temperature was unbearably high and the humidity was 98 or something, and I had a three- piece-suit on, and a black shirt and tie and a wig like a buzz- bee hat. "I was cycling up and down and people would jump up and try to take pictures, which was really not conducive to getting good results. I think I changed the shirt six times with perspiration." »

Ben Bratt Concerned About Fat?

29 December 2000

Julia Roberts's boyfriend Benjamin Bratt is desperately trying to pile the pounds back on after playing junkie playwright Miguel Pinero. The Red Planet (2000) star found it easy losing weight for the harrowing role - he just stopped going to the gym - but now he's sick of looking like a beanpole. He says, "I went from 185 pounds to 170 . I had to stop going to gym and continue to eat everything I usually eat. I lost 15 pounds that way. "Since I was a kid I've been accused of having worms or some other creature living inside of me because of the way I put food away I never gained weight. "When I was a kid in high school they used to call me 'Scarecrow' because I was so gangly and skinny. Since the film, I've had to go back into the gym and try to put muscle on. That's my struggle." Bratt is hoping his family's traditional Christmas delicacies will help. He adds, "I love this strawberry rhubarb cake my mother makes and we also have this other desert - a yellow cake with chocolate frosting. You get whipped cream and fold a can of pineapple chunks into the whipped cream, and dollop it on the cake. Delicious." »

Douglas Happy About Traffic Debate

29 December 2000

Recently wed actor Michael Douglas says he's glad law enforcement officials have praised his new film Traffic (2000), even though it questions the effectiveness of the drug war. He says, "Everyone who sees the movie comes out of it with a different reaction. We screened it for the DEA and U.S. Customs, and they're happy with it, believing it shows how tough their job is. Other people see it and think the message is that the war on drugs is futile. "That's why I like it. The movie has the courage to raise issues." In the film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, Douglas plays a presidentially appointed anti-drug tsar who discovers his daughter is an addict. Douglas has had his own struggle with alcohol addiction and went into rehabilitation in 1990. His son, Cameron, was arrested last year for cocaine possession. Douglas says, "It can happen to anybody, not just the dysfunctional family or the liberal family." »
