Joel Edgerton has said that he "empathises" with accusations that Exodus: Gods and Kings is guilty of whitewashing.
The star of Ridley Scott's upcoming Biblical adaptation addressed complaints that white actors have been cast in all the lead roles in the film, which is set in ancient Egypt.
"It's not my job to make those decisions," Edgerton told Sbs. "I got asked to do a job and it would have been very hard to say no to that job.
"But I do say that I am sensitive to it and I do, I do understand and empathise with that position."
Edgerton will play the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses in the movie.
Exodus also stars Christian Bale as Moses, with Aaron Paul as Joshua and Sigourney Weaver as Queen Tuya.
It has been accused of restricting black actors to minor roles including servants and slaves, prompting a backlash on Twitter under the #BoycottExodusMovie hashtag.
