The X-Men movie franchise has now grossed over $3 billion (£1.8 million).

The success of X-Men: Days of Future Past has moved 20th Century Fox's series beyond the box office milestone, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bryan Singer's latest outing on the franchise has grossed $702.2 million (£412.2 million) and is anticipated to surpass The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $703.2 million (£412.8 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $710.7 million (£417.2 million) to become the most successful film of 2014 to date.

Days of Future Past is the seventh outing for the franchise.

2006's X-Men: The Last Stand is the second most successful of the films, having taken $457.4 million (£268.5 million) worldwide.

Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen starred in the time travel tale X-Men: Days of Future Past.
