Marvel Studios has reportedly lined up screenwriter Jon Spaihts to pen the Doctor Strange film.

Spaihts - who wrote Prometheus with Damon Lindelof - hinted at joining the project in a cryptic message posted on his Twitter account.

"Doctor Strange was always my favourite Marvel hero. It's a good day," Spaihts tweeted.

Scott Derrickson is slated to direct the project, which will follow the powerful protector of earth as he fights all magical and mystical threats.

The Marvel character was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963. Doctor Strange was first depicted in the pages of Strange Tales #110.

A release date for the Doctor Strange film has yet to be announced.

Spaihts is also slated to write the screenplay for Universal's Mummy reboot. »
