Sony/MGM’s “22 Jump Street” has shown plenty of firepower with an estimated $62 million opening weekend, topping the launch of Fox/Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon 2” with a projected $50 million.

The R-rated comedy sequel took in $25 million on Friday including a solid $5.5 million at late-night Thursday shows — marking career-best launch weekends for stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

How to Train Your Dragon 2” followed with $18 million on Friday (with $2 million on Thursday night).

Both sequels are outperforming their predecessors. “22  Jump Street,” with Tatum and Hill’s characters now in college, blew away “21 Jump Street,” which opened with $36.3 million in 2012 on its way to $138.4 million domestically.

How to Train Your Dragon 2,″ with a $145 million budget, should benefit from being one of the few animated titles in the summer season. The first “Dragon” debuted in 2010 with $43 million on went on to cume $215 million domestically and $494 million globally.
