NBC has won the first Tuesday of the summer season in key demos behind a good return for vet “America’s Got Talent” and a pretty good start for original drama “The Night Shift.” ABC hung in there with its unscripted fare, including the season premiere of “Extreme Weight Loss,” but Fox saw tiny numbers for its alternative series “Riot” and “I Wanna Marry Harry.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “America’s Got Talent” averaged a 3.0 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 11.9 million viewers overall, standing as easily Tuesday’s top-rated series. It was down just a tick in the demo from last year’s opener, which aired behind “The Voice”; its rating matched the 8-10 p.m. deliveries of ABC, CBS and Fox. In total viewers, this is the best start for “Talent” since 2011.
