The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has received seven nominations for the 2014 Jameson Empire Awards.

Steve McQueen's BAFTA-winning 12 Years a Slave was close behind Peter Jackson's second Hobbit film with six nominations, while Paul Greengrass's Captain Phillips and Francis Lawrence's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire both earned five.

All four films will compete for the Best Film award along with Gravity, while a number of other categories are designed to honour specific genres including Horror, Thriller and Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

Greengrass will also receive the Empire Inspiration Award in celebration both of Captain Phillips and of his entire body of work, including the Bourne trilogy.

The Jameson Empire Awards winners are based entirely on public votes, which can be cast via the official website.
