Lorde's music career beginnings were a far cry from Grammy gold. They began, though, before the "Royals" crooner even became a teenager, at the ripe old age of 12. The New Zealand singer-songwriter, who was born and raised in Auckland, started off performing and singing in drama class when she was five, she told Rolling Stone, and went on to land her first record deal with Universal Records at age 12. Lorde's co-manager, Scott Maclachlan, discovered the teen phenom from a video of her singing at a middle-school talent show, where she crooned Duffy's "Warwick Avenue" along with a schoolmate named Louie.
