Star Wars: Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirms that Star Wars: Episode VII will exist within the "canon" created by George Lucas, and the spin-off movies will "exist within that vast universe that he created." However, she added: "There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the stand-alone films) in and out of the saga episodes." So it appears that any new characters in the spin-offs will stand alone -- and out of the main action -- though it's not clear if that rule applies to familiar characters rumored for the spin-offs, such as Yoda and Boba Fett.
