The stars of The Musketeers have admitted that they were shocked when Peter Capaldi was cast in Doctor Who.

Capaldi plays villain Cardinal Richelieu in BBC One's new Sunday night drama, though his casting as the new Doctor will rule him out of any potential second series of The Musketeers.

"It hadn't occurred to me and when he was cast, it just seemed the most brilliant decision," said actor Tom Burke, who plays Athos. "I thought, 'Of course!' so I'm very excited."

Alexandra Dowling - who plays Queen Anne - said that she felt "a mixture of elated and sad" when Capaldi's casting was revealed in August.

"It was so exciting and then we were like... 'Oh no!' but it was just such a privilege to work with him," she said.

Maimie McCoy (Milady de Winter) also confirmed that Capaldi was a big fan of the sci-fi series »
