- The series premiere of "True Detective" and the season premiere of "Girls" delivered solid ratings Sunday night (Jan. 12). "True Detective" delivered 2.3 million viewers for its premiere, which was HBO's best since "Boardwalk Empire" in 2010. ("Game of Thrones" debuted to 2.2 million people in 2011.) "Girls," meanwhile, brought in 1.1 million people for the first of its two episodes, a first-run high for the show. The second episode drew 881,000 people.

- Multiple Emmy nominee Jane Kaczmarek has joined the cast of USA's comedy pilot "Playing House." The former "Malcolm in the Middle" star will play the mother of Jessica St. Clair's character, who's going through a midlife awakening. [Hollywood Reporter]

- HBO and Chronicles Books announced a new companion book for "Game of Thrones." Titled "Inside HBO's Game of Thrones: Season 3 & 4," the follow up to the first behind-the-scenes book is slated for a fall 2014 release date. »
