After delivering the generally well-received Oblivion, Tom Cruise is returning to the sci-fi genre next year with the Doug Liman-helmed Edge of Tomorrow. Mixing a bit of Groundhog Day in with some blockbuster action, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the film today, giving us an idea of what to expect when it hits theatres next June.

Co-starring with Cruise are Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Jeremy Piven, in a story that revolves around Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise), who has to defend earth from aliens by “repeatedly dying and going back into combat.” Like I said above, it’s basically a sci-fi/action blockbuster take on Groundhog Day, which could turn out to be cool, right?

The trailer itself seems fairly promising, with plenty of explosions, gritty warfare, a potential romantic subplot and lots of shots featuring Cruise looking totally badass in a mech suit. »
