Actor Christopher Evan Welch has died, aged 48.

The stage and screen star appeared in a wide range of films including Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds and Lincoln, and Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master.

He died on Monday (December 2) in a Los Angeles hospital, his agency Paradigm confirmed. Further details have yet to be confirmed.

He had been in La while shooting a role in the upcoming HBO series Silicon Valley.

Welch debuted on Broadway in 1997 in London Assurance. He went on to appear in the 2002 revival of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, and also featured in 2006's Festen.

Other film roles included the narrator in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Stepford Wives, The Interpreter, and Synecdoche, New York.

On television, he was a series regular in AMC's Rubicon as Grant Test. He also had parts in The Sopranos, The Practice, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law »
