Steven Moffat has claimed that he "sort of knew" Christopher Eccleston would opt out of Doctor Who's 50th special.

Back in April, Digital Spy was the first to reveal that Eccleston had turned down the opportunity to appear in 'The Day of the Doctor' after meeting with showrunner Moffat.

Speaking today to BBC America, the sci-fi drama's lead writer and executive producer said: "I sort of knew that he wouldn't [do it].

"I did a couple of meetings, and there was a moment, I suppose, a giddy moment where [I thought] 'Would he actually do it?'"

Though Eccleston ultimately declined to take part, Moffat insisted that the actor offered a "very gentlemanly" refusal.

"This wasn't the kind of decision he took in a funk or that he was cross," he insisted. "He was very measured, very kind. He's a good bloke."

Doctor Who's 50th anniversary episode will air tomorrow night (Saturday, »
