Downton Abbey returned to over 9 million on Sunday evening (September 22), according to overnight figures.

The ITV drama's fourth series opener was seen by 9.12m (38.0%) at 9pm (385,000/2.4% on +1). This was down around 700k from the previous series finale, but up 2.3m from the Christmas special.

The X Factor climbed to a new peak this series of 9.42m (37.3%) at 8pm (413k/1.6%) for its final auditions episode. Earlier, Surprise, Surprise entertained 4.56m (22.0%) at 7pm (247k/1.0%).

On BBC One, Countryfile was seen by 6.24m (29.8%) at 7pm, followed by Antiques Roadshow with 5.29m (21.0%) at 8pm.

New thriller By Any Means began with 4.11m (16.4%) at 9pm.

BBC Two's Crane Gang was seen by 1.14m (4.5%) at 8pm, while The Story of Jews brought in 720k (2.9%) at 9pm.

On Channel 4, Kevin McCloud's Man Made House attracted 1.23m (4.9%) at 8pm (248k/1.0%). The Big Fat Quiz of the 80s amused 1.61m (6.7%) at 9pm (217k/1.3%).
