Director Gia Milani has won the Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award and C$10,000 for her debut feature “All The Wrong Reasons,” which tells the entangled stories of four big-box store employees and features one of the final screen performances of Canadian actor Cory Monteith (“Glee”).

The juried prize was open to all 28 directors with films in the Toronto film festival’s Discovery program, which screens primarily first or second features.

After accepting her award, Milani—whose screenplay won Slamdance’s Script Accessible Award in 2010—told Variety the film’s story was inspired by a close friend who is a member of the Canadian armed forces and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from a tough tour overseas.

The film also stars Karine Vanasse, Emily Hampshire and Kevin Zegers.

“Reasons,” which was shot in Halifax, was produced by Milani and Tony Whalen of Shore Road Pictures, and Phyllis Laing. Kirk D »
