Zhang Yimou is reportedly in talks to direct an upcoming adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it has been reported.

Negotiations for the Chinese director to oversee the film based on Victor Hugo's 18th century novel are in the very early stages, according to Hitflix.

The Hunchback adaptation, titled Quasimodo, has had actor Josh Brolin attached for several years.

Brolin has signed on to play the titular character in the movie, which at one point was to be directed by Tim Burton.

Yimou is best known for his highly-stylized martial arts films, including Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

Meanwhile, Brolin will next be seen in Spike Lee's remake of the Korean cult classic Oldboy.
