Mike and Sulley are continuing their stint at the head of the class for a second weekend. Monsters University, Pixar’s new prequel, won its opening weekend handily and has now fended off stiff competition from Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock cop comedy The Heat to stay atop the Us box office charts, with $46.1 million to date in the States according to studio estimates. The film now has a healthy $171 million Us take after just two weeks on release.Still, Paul Feig and Team Heat won’t be too upset, as the new comedy opened to an impressive $40 million for second place. It forced World War Z into third, with the Brad Pitt zombie fest earning $29.8 million. There was sobering news for Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, though, as Sony’s immensely fun White House Down faltered, opening in fourth to $25.7 million. It’ll need to go some to recoup that hefty $150 million plus price tag. »
