This year's MasterChef is almost unbearably annoying. Is it the new round, the new slimline Greg Wallace or the repetition – and can it ever recover?

There was a time when I thought my love affair with MasterChef would never end. I envisioned us both decades into the future, strolling hand in hand along a sunny promenade: Gregg Wallace still yelling "Woooar" with the vigour of a much younger man, me pretending not to be freaked out by his latest child bride. It would be a happy dotage.

Or so I thought. In reality, I'm starting to think that our relationship might be on the rocks. For reasons I can't quite put my finger on, I've found this year's series of MasterChef almost unbearably annoying. Perhaps it's the new round that has been added – it turns out that watching people try to recreate a dish by taste alone isn't nearly as gripping as it sounds. »
