Miguel Arteta is to adapt popular children's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day for Disney Pictures.

The Cedar Rapids filmmaker will direct the movie based on a screenplay by Lisa Cholodenko and Rob Lieber, Deadline reports.

The Kids Are All Right director Cholodenko was previously attached to direct the film, but recently dropped out.

Alexander tells the story of a young boy who considers moving to Australia after having a wretched day.

Disney has already hired Steve Carell to play the boy's father, while Shawn Levy, Lisa Henson and Dan Levine are on board as producers.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will enter production in the autumn.
