Disney and Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams truly lived up to its name this weekend at the North American box office,earning nearly twice as much as the rest of the top ten films combined. The highly-anticipated fantasy feature knocked the Warner dud Jack the Giant Slayer from top spot and held off fellow newcomer Dead Man Down, which had a horrible debut in fourth place. Overall, the top ten was up a huge 43% over last weekend's totals and 9% up from the top ten earners one year ago.

Mirroring the release of the 2010 blockbuster Alice in Wonderland, Oz: The Great and Powerful debuted on 3,912 screens - many of which were 3D and IMAX 3D - and gave a dormant box office a desperately needed shot in the arm to the tune of $80.2 million. The massive opening ranks »
