Oz to Boast One of the Biggest March Debuts Ever

Oz: Will It Reach $85 million on its debut weekend? Starring James Franco as the man who eventually becomes the Wizard of Oz, the Sam Raimi-directed Oz the Great and Powerful may reach $85 million at the North American box office this weekend (March 8-10). As per Disney estimates found on the website Box Office Mojo, this past Friday the fantasy adventure collected a strong $24.11 million from 3,912 venues, including $2 million from late Thursday and midnight Friday screenings. The studio claims to be expecting no more than $74 million by Sunday evening -- perhaps so once Oz reaches $85 million -- or at least $80 million -- Disney can tell the world that their The Wizard of Oz prequel has surprisingly "overperformed."
