America has rarely seemed as dreary as this cross-country road movie from New Jersey to San Francisco in which unmarried son Andy (Seth Rogen), a businessman in the cleaning industry, and his long-widowed archetypal Jewish mother Joyce (Barbra Streisand) come to terms with each other. Between meetings in which Andy attempts to interest chain stores in his organic cleaning fluid, she tricks him into meeting ex-girlfriends. Meanwhile he intends to reunite her with an old flame in California. It's all kvetch this and kvetch that, with few jokes or amusing encounters, and a side trip to the Grand Canyon which both think overrated and slip away from after two minutes. Rogen's expert timing has little to hone itself on.
