Keri Russell has been cast in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The Americans star will join Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee in the follow-up to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, reports Variety.

The upcoming film will be set 15 years later, in a world where mankind has been driven to the brink of extinction by the super-intelligent apes.

The human resistance movement grows in San Francisco, while Serkis's Caesar tries to maintain harmony in the apes' new world order.

Russell previously worked with director Matt Reeves on Felicity. She has also appeared in Mission: Impossible III, Waitress and August Rush.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will begin filming in the spring and is scheduled for release on May 23, 2014.
