Variety reports that Video Game Developer Crystal Dynamics, a subsidiary of Square Enix, is working Gk films (The Departed, Rango) to reboot the Tomb Raider film franchise along with the new video game franchise which released “Tomb Raider” today.

The video game was originally released by Eidos interactive in 1997 and and was a massive success spawning countless sequels and re-releases. The game followed the character of a sexy young British archaeologist who solves puzzles and shoots bad guys in her quest to recover ancient artifacts.

The success of the first few games led to the 2001 film Tomb Raider which starred Angelina Jolie and grossed $274 Million worldwide against a budget of $115 million. The sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life made just $156 Million against a budget of $95 Million.
