With American Idol dipping 7 percent week-to-week to its lowest rating since July 2003, ABC’s Modern Family — at least per preliminary numbers — is looking at its first Wednesday win ever over the Fox juggernaut, scoring a 3.9 rating to Idol‘s 3.8.

The closest the ABC sitcom has come to Idol previously was within a tenth of a rating point (just last week), so even if it winds up a tie in the finals… still a first.

Though Idol of course led the night in total viewers, it did so with its smallest audience (13.15 mil) since August 2002, down 8 percent week-to-week.
