Nicholas Sparks adaptations are close to becoming a sub-genre of their own in Hollywood, with romantic drama Safe Haven the eighth of his novels to receive the big-screen treatment.

Julianne Hough stars as a young woman who moves to a small town in North Carolina in a bid to escape her dark past, and meets Alex (Josh Duhamel), a widower struggling to rebuild his own life.

"He has a way of striking at the heart of... what people wish for in love," Duhamel told Digital Spy, when asked what it is about Sparks's writing that resonates with audiences.

"These are real stories about people who are strong characters, who in our case have found love [before] and it didn't work out for whatever reason, and then find each other. It's a movie about second chances."
